Follow up question to a fairly common response I see on the "assimilation" issue in regards to the current immigration debate. Whereas, immigrants from previous times coming to the US seemed, in many cases, more likely and more willing to want to join mainstream American culture, I see defenders of today's immigrants that try to maintain as much as their traditional "heritage" and customs as possible while ignoring the larger American culture/society insist they do so because American culture is "morally bankrupt;" drugs, violence, gangs, sex, family breakdown are all issues that are pointed to as signs of immorality and decay of American culture that immigrants are said to find so "foreign" and offensive to their traditional ways of living. Any thoughts on this one way or the other?

Howdy Bucky. Not sure exactly what your question is. To begin with, I live a mile from one foreign "culture"-Canda. Have been to various parts of Canada and Mexico, many places in the Caribbean and in Europe, Costa Rica and "unofficially" was in Australia; have also been through about half the US. Which Sandusky are you citing- the one in Michigan or the one in Ohio (Cedar Point)? Or is there another?

85% of Americans do not want the criminal element of illegals here. That, in large part, has to do with a moral position. I do not see the moral integrity in illegals, after all there is nothing moral or ethical about what they have done. There excuse is nothing more than that...an excuse to to as little as possible in a new land that doesn't welcome them in the first place. Part of the reason They(illegals) are unwilling to assimilate is because they do not want to give anything to a country that would deport them. They must figure that since America isn't giving anything to them they will not give anything to America. Just think about it. Why would a person voluntarily and illegally move to a country that they themselves felt was "morally Bankrupt". The largest street gangs in America are comprised mostly of illegals from south of the border, the majority of drugs in America are brought here from south of the border, with the gangs comes violence, what the cultures south of the border accept as "sex" would land a person in prison here in America. The same thing can be said about the rights of women in these cultures and they have convinced you that it is Americas value system that is wrong huh?

Drugs: I don't see how we are any worse with drugs than, say, Columbian immigrants (whose country makes and exports large amounts) or Russia (who has gotten just as bad, if not worse, than the US). The only difference is the average American tends to have more money to spend on drugs than most other countries.

Gangs: I think you will find the gangs in Russia and South America just as bad as American gangs.

Sex: Not sure what you mean there. If you mean teenage pregnancy or disease, I think there are plenty of other countries that are worse (South America, Africa). If you mean with how we flaunt it, Europe is much more casual about sex than we are.

Violence: There are countries still where beating your wife is still legal, where the dictatorships snatch people away to never be seen again, where "freedom fighters" routinely kill or kidnap people. I think all you have to do is look at South America, Africa or the Middle East to see worse violence than we have.

I don't think we are more morally bankrupt than anyone else. It is just rhetoric spewed by extremists fighting for their cause. Here is an example of the hypocracy: Did you know that Mexico treats illegal immigrants to their country from other South American countries just as bad, if not worse, than the U.S.? Funny how they don't mention that when they are flaming our immigration policies.

No.
American culture to my understanding has been opened to variety of culture and has been changing may be more than any other fixed or closed culture, and considering the technology of Internet, TV broadcasting world wide. there is the opportunity to get to know each other better than before.
Personally, I respect American for being open minded people.
Finally, as long as I am concerned east love west and west love east as south or north.
It has been this war going on and we suffer from the historical war which leave the residue of accusing of each other.

The Redneck is right on all counts. Where the heck do clueless people get the idea that poverty plus hidebound and ferocious control of all aspects of human life equal purity? Most people from "traditional" cultures can't wait to break free, and begin to live their lives without fear of violent reprisals for anything that looks like independent thought.

Well, the illegals can't talk since illegal immigrants commit far more crimes per capita as a group than our general population. As to the others, if it bothers us, we should make it a visa requirement, and they can decide before they come.

This is our country, if they want to play by different rules, they can do it somewhere else.

We don't need to justify our preference for our own culture in our own country to someone who wants to supplant it with theirs.

If immigrants do not like the culture/or the society of the country
that they immigrated to then why don't they stay at their country of origin.
Why should any country change its culture or society just to
make immigrants feel at home.

Morally bankrupt? You mean, these immigrants prefer moral bankruptcy over their own government? If we are morally bankrupt, than perhaps the countries that these people are fleeing from are far worse.

I agree, but unfortunately crime is never/ was never a part of American culture. Crime is crime..

The Mexican wave of illegals is always defending themselves by stating, "your racist, can't someone have traditions, etc.."

Of course they can-- but not adapting to the English language and flying your Mexican flag is not tradition-- and if it means that much to you, stay in Mexico!! Or wherever you came from!!
