Want a small dog, I think the Yorkies are so cute but would it be a good pet for my 7yr. old boy? We live in an apartment, work 8 hrs. a day but I can come home at lunch, are they barkers? Would it be ok alone at times?

We had 2 toy Yorkies at the same time, they were mother and son. If you get one, make sure your son is gentle with them because they are so small. They are "spunky", and excellent watch dogs. Ours only barked if someone was coming to the house. They should be ok when you aren 't home. It would be a good idea to come home at lunchtime to let the dog out. Ours liked riding in the car. You have to brush them regularly because of their long hair. You can take them alot of places, because of their size. We enjoyed ours very much.

We also had 2 toy Poodles at the same time after the Yorkies passed on. They have the same characteristics as Yorkies, and don't shed, because they have real hair. Either breed would be a good choice for a small dog.

Most of the toy breeds were specifically developed to be babied; they usually don't like being left alone for long periods. Yorkies do tend to make good apartment dogs, as most of them are even smaller than a cat.
All terriers need a lot of stimulation, as they are highly intelligent and curious. It might be okay if the dog gets lots of attention, exercise and play whenever people are at home.

Well it depends on how rough your son is with the dog, maybe you should think of getting him another breed of dog. Why?
The Yorkie is very fragile and tiny, sorry to say but the yorkie is more for people that don't have children, and also because a yourkie is supposed to be around people all the time, would love staying in a flat but not with it being alone for so long.
They need extra special looking after and they cost quite a bit of
money, in fact in South Africa they cost aroung R4000. So I would suggest another breed altogether

I currently have 2 toy yorkies. They are good watch dogs and very loving. I don't recommend them for young kids as they are very small and delicate babies. Unless the kid is taught how to be gentle with them. My two stay by themselves during the day, but I do go home at lunch to let them out. They love to ride and seem to never tire of playing.

yorkies are beautiful and wonderful dogs. they are wonderful companions. if your child can be responsible and know that small dogs are fragile (small bones break easily) but they are very active and love the energy a child can have to share. I have a small dog and she loves little kids. all you have to do is keep an eye on them together. this is a wonderful breed for an apartment. just make sure you take her for lotsa walks/dog parks cuz they do need to burn off some energy and fresh air is good for all of you. at first housebreaking is gonna be tough cuz tiny pups cant hold it for four hours. small breed dogs generally take a while to housebreak. good luck

I have a West Highland White Terrior. Great with our family, easily house trained. Have been gone for 7-8 hours and never had an accident. Now that my job is more flexible. I do come home to visit him . In the cooler weather he stays with me at my studio.I have had him for almost 11 years.
Would definitely get another. My best friend!
