if someone had called me a f***ing idiot i would be pissed off and would of retorted with a swear word as well! but id does depend on the situation! if it was said as a joke then ur husband blew it out of proportion. But if the other person was serious then i would say ur husband was right!
in the english culture we dont take being called idiot and things well so we retort with more bad words!

Your Husband Is Very Good He Did Not Hit The Person Being Rude,
If Someone Called Me A F**king Idiot I Would Have Told Them To Go Jump Up Their Own Bum And Die.
As For Which Word Is Worse Depends On What You Say.
Don't Worry About It There Are Some Really Nice People In The World Too.
Keep Smiling

The first bad word is not the worst - it was only the spark that lit
the others mans‘s temper, habits or self control. He may be a
lunatic, perhaps someone who picks fights only for the fun of
it, to see your reaction. The other man is only provoking
a reaction. It is not cowardly to pay no attention, it may even
be the best way out. I am large and athletic (230 lbs) and have
won many prizes in athletics, swimming, target shooting (heavy
bore) judo and have won over 500 medals in my time. I have
never sworn back at anyone and I am also a foreigner in my
land. Control of your your temper is the first lesson one learns
if you wish to be a winner. The person who starts the offences,
usually is weaker of mind and wants to show how great he is?
Keep to yourself, unless you have to self defend yourself
physically. Remember, that some make this a game for fun,
but they are only idiots trying to prove to themselves how great
they are. Please, consider that this may a good time to show your mental superiority and possibly make him shrink into his tiny
little world. Above all, when a lady is present, she must be
protected from all offences. Please consider that I am not writing
this to gain 10 points, I am doing so only to try and help. Show
these words to your husband and ask him to consider them. And, only as a final word, I have none of my medals on display and I have been hounoured by a Presidentional medal of honour for my deeds, which also is not on display. Some may
recognize the name that I use in this site, because it is my true
name, I hide nothing because, if I do, my words will mean nothing.
Please bear in mind that I do not wish to be recognized for this
statement because it would defeat my purpose. God bless you
both, and think twice next time.

Used in front of another word, f***ing can be considered nothing more than an intensifier; your husband should have been more offended by "idiot". However, perhaps the person who insulted him was perceptive and hit the nail on the head. Swear back in Spanish next time.

People in England do use bad language to tell people off. Sometimes they don't mean it to be offensive, they say something because they are angry. Your husband was not in the wrong to have answered the swearer back. What the swearer said was worse than what your husband said. In my opinion.
It doesn't matter who said what, swearing is not a good way to have an argument it shows a low command of the english language.

Yes, your husband is correct. The first insult is worse. However, your husband could have handled the situation better by walking away or saying something like, "I pity you for your lack of knowledge." The other person is rude and crude but it doesn't make your husband much better when he responds in a similar fashion but it is understandable that he was angry. Don't be too hard on him!

it relatively is seen Germanic, yet loads of words with Latin roots got here into the language after the Norman conquest of england in the 11th century. The language that resulted (center English) became into particularly diverse from the previous English that became into spoken before.

In a way he is correct.....I look at it like the first person who uses profanity has changed the rules of the conversation by escalation to profanity and any response that they get that is profane is because they opened that door.
What he should have done was remain aloof from language of this sort for neither showed any maturity or class......although....I probably would have done the same or worse!

They are both just as bad. But the issue here is that you should take your husband's side--no matter how wrong it was how he retaliated.
The point is that your husband was insulted. You can ask him later on to ease up on the language.

I agree with hotbelfast. There are enough words in the English language to insult people without resorting to swearing. Two of my favourites are:-
asinine which means like an ***
ansarine which means goose like.
