What's the best way of finding accommodation in NYC? Newspapers, internet, local news-agents? What areas of the city should I avoid? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thx.

So you are staying here for two years? Well if you are coming here to study you can find housing through your university's housing office. Otherwise, try www.sublet.com. I would avoid living in the Bronx or Staten Island as they are sort of a hassle to get to.

But you should really go through the school housing office because they can find you affordable housing near the school where you'll be studying.

Hotels.com and Expedia.com are two of the best sites to check. Don't make the mistake of staying at a hotel near any of the airports to save money; it will take a lot of time to get into the city away from enjoying your trip and none of them are in neighborhoods that you want to spend much time in. Anywhere around Times Square is very safe, but you might find some bargains if you go downtown near the Financial District. It just depends upon when you're visiting and what is going on in the city as far as conventions. Hotel prices jump up a lot the week following Labor Day and don't drop down again until the week of Thanksgiving. The first two weeks of December are also very high priced, but the week before Christmas and prior to New Years tend to be lower priced as well. January is also a cheaper month, but not great weather for visiting the city. There are several YMCA's that have rooms for much cheaper than hotels. The West Side Y on 63rd is in a great location for sightseeing and is a very safe neighborhood. I'd advise staying below 110th street (the top of Central Park) and not in the Lower East Side (Not to be confused with the Financial District). Also, take subways around the city. Much cheaper (and during the day often faster) than cabs, and a great way to see how we really live and the variety of people in our great city. Of course, don't ride the subway alone late at night. The double decker tourist buses are a fun way to get to see a lot of the city as well, as are the yellow taxi boats that you can get a day pass for and travel to numerous points around Manhattan. Or even take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry to Staten Island and back. Manhattan at dusk/night from the water is truly breathtaking. And unless you are going to upscale restaurants, don't bother packing fancy clothes; jeans or shorts and comfortable shoes are the norm. And jeans are fine for going to Broadway shows. If you want to get 1/2 price tickets, the TKTS booth in Times Square sells them for the same evening, and they have a booth at the South Street Seaport that always has a much shorter line. Have a great time when you're here!
