Dawdling is consciously taking your time and being slow. When you ask your child to get her jacket on, and she agrees to do it, but decides to wait until she has added a few more blocks to her building, and then slowly goes to look for her jacket, that's dawdling. When your child is dawdling is with their food, they either are bored or do not like their food.

With preschoolers it's a huge part of the learning to eat process. They (knowingly) take their time with their food. Move it around their plates, make messes with it. They're learning what is and is not acceptable at meal times.. they're experimenting with their food.

The important thing to remember is that it's a normal part of meal time for toddlers and preschoolers.
