If you pass more than one stone the first time you have kidney stones, and you have a family history of stones, you are more likely to have kidney stones again. However, you can take steps to help prevent them, including:

Drinking more fluids. Try to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water per day.
Increasing how much fiber you eat. Fiber includes oat and wheat bran, beans, whole-wheat breads, wheat cereals, cabbage, and carrots.
Eating less beef, pork, and poultry.
Eating a moderate or high amount of calcium-rich foods, such as dairy products. Eating recommended amounts of calcium, combined with a diet low in sodium and protein, may decrease your risk of kidney stones.6 In older people and younger women, one study indicates that eating higher levels of calcium reduces the risk of kidney stones.7
Avoiding foods that are high in oxalate, such as dark green vegetables, nuts, and chocolate.
Not adding salt when you cook or eat. Try removing the salt shaker from your table.

im sure your doctor should have mentioned to stay away from certain foods i hope this helps

A person who has had kidney stones often gets them again in the future. Other risk factors include renal tubular acidosis and resultant nephrocalcinosis. Some types of stones tend to run in families. Some types may be associated with bowel disease, ileal bypass for obesity, or renal tubule defects. Diseases of the small intestine increase the tendency to form calcium oxalate stones.
Please see the webpages for more details on Renal tubular acidosis and Nephrocalcinosis.

What causes kidney stones?
A person with a family history of kidney stones may be more likely to develop stones. Urinary tract infections, kidney disorders such as cystic kidney diseases, and certain metabolic disorders such as hyperparathyroidism are also linked to stone formation.

In addition, more than 70 percent of people with a rare hereditary disease called renal tubular acidosis develop kidney stones.

Other causes of kidney stones are hyperuricosuria which is a disorder of uric acid metabolism, gout, excess intake of vitamin D, urinary tract infections, and blockage of the urinary tract. Certain diuretics which are commonly called water pills or calcium-based antacids may increase the risk of forming kidney stones by increasing the amount of calcium in the urine.

Are you on any regular medications? Some can cause kidney stones at a high frequency.

Otherwise, drink lots of water. Hopefully that will help.

high mineral intake, from wells or some bottled waters, can contribute (there are many different kind of kidney stones). the ultrasonic suggestion is also a good one; it's cheaper, as i understand it, and less invasive.
