I like Hocus Pocus - it's a funny movie. I try real hard not to take stereotyping too seriously and get offended. Years of being a big-boobed blonde has helped with that. I think it's important to be able to joke about things.

Just about all portrayals of witches in the media are negative or highly stereotypical at best. Still, I'd say that there worse movies than Hocus-Pocus when it comes to casting a negative light on wiccans. The Craft is far worse. Oh, and I'm an atheist.

My mother's a practicing Wiccan, and I'm rather well-read in the Wiccan/Pagan religion... I love Hocus Pocus! It's one of my greatest childhood memories. What's the point of yelling at it, calling it discrimination or negative portrayal, or anything when it's just a movie? It's a movie, and it wasn't meant to be some educational statement. Every type of group existing, political, religious, racial, gender, whatever, has stereotypes associated with it that exist. Some are downright hateful and ignorant, and meant to be taken seriously. But honestly, who watches Hocus Pocus and then goes, "Wow, I'll bet that's what ALL witches are like all over and I'm going to form my entire basis of perception off of Bette Midler shrieking out laughs, Sarah Jessica Parker charming children en masse, and Kathy Najimy riding a vacuum cleaner!" ? Idiots, and idiots alone.
It's so funny! I loved it when Mary rode the vacuum... "WEEEEE!"

Never saw it or heard of it. I recently watched another pagan-lambasted film, the remake of Bewitched, and thought it was silly and entertaining and nothing at all like being a real witch. Movies aren't reality. Look at all the furor over the fictional film and novel DaVinci Code.

I am a Unitarian and practice Earth Centered celebrations at my church. Hocus Pocus is a fun movie and piece of fiction. It is no more accurate than other pieces of fiction.
Its good to have a sense of humor and to be able to laugh at yourself. I am suspicious of anyone who won't allow their beliefs to be examined.
Good luck with your training.

Like so many movies based off of religion, culture, or history some things will inevitably be misrepresented in what could be an exceedingly deprecating manner. Intelligent persons will recognize movies as merely forms of entertainment and not be offended, with any luck.

I liked it, was a good movie, not really about wicca or paganism, but a good movie.
