I have Polar and like it. I believe it is one of the top companies but I dont know if its #1.

I use a Polar Heart rate monitor. You can score a no-frills one for about $75 or less. If you can afford it, you might want to look at the Garmin Forerunner series. They are a GPS as well as a heart rate monitor (great if you run outdoors). They are pricey though (about $300).
