I am 21, female, 5'6 and 121 lbs, I don't drink or smoke and I don't have other unhealthy habits except always staying up late studying. I have been feeling very thirsty lately although I drink a lot of water, I don't have a good appetite either... it is unlikely that I have diabetes... I heard that brain tumors will get people thirsty too, so I am very worried. I am always a healthy person.

My husband directed me to your question.

I know you're scared. But asking what it could be in here will only serve to fuel that fear. You've got lots of answers...some are OK, others are not sound advice.

The best thing you can do is to be evaluated by a doctor and quit trying to guess. Sorry if this sounds harsh...but it truly is what you need to do to allay your fears.

Like everyone else has said, go get a checkup. Get some bloodwork done. I had a bizarre case of diabetes 8 years ago. I had blurry vision, i had fatigue, but i didn't have any excessive thirst or frequent urination. The doctor first put me on Glucophage, and then said that it was lowering my blood sugar TOO much. Then i was on diet, where i drastically changed my eating habits. Well, after being diabetic for 2 years, and going to the doctor every three months for a Glycoslated Hemoglobin test, which every diabetic gets, i kept getting a normal test result. It was BELOW a diabetic level everytime. My employer has a plan with an HMO, and sometimes I see different doctors for checkups and such. All of the doctors i would see would say that i am not diabetic, because my test always comes back normal. Finally, one doctor told me that i should get a blood test once a year, just to play things safe. No need to prick my finger, no need for a meter, no need for test strips, no need for anything like that. Since that time, about 4 or 5 years ago, i have been able to eat or drink anything i want. No more fatigue, no more blurry vision, no more anything!

I know that Magic Johnson doesn't have HIV anymore, or so they say. That was what, almost 20 years ago when he was diagnosed. I guess i'm a miracle cure, too.

Increased thirst and loss of appetite can both be signs of diabetes - and it can strike anybody. Steve Redgrave, the 5 times olympic gold medalist rower acquired diabetes during his career (when he was obviously a very fit and healthy person) and went on to win further golds with the disease.

Other symptoms can include a general lack of energy. Having to get up in the night to urinate, and waking up in the morning with leg cramps... or, if you want a very simple test, taste your urine - if you have diabetes it will be sweet. Or you could always go to your doctor...

If you are worried, don't ask people on yahoo answers - GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR.

I am over 50 years old. I am always thirsty. I always have something to drink near me. I always test negative for diabetes yet it runs in my family. In fact, aside from the tests being negative, most other things indicate I am at least borderline diabetic.

Listen, my wife is an RN and a nurse practictioner. If you aren't satisfied with the answers you get and you won't go see your doctor, place a note to me in your "additional information to this question" and I'll have my wife look at your question when she wakes up. She is rhubarb3142.

Check out for diabetes, especially if you're urinating a lot, if you check the toilet you should also see that drops of urine sticks to the sides - sorry I know it may not be a nice thing to put on the answer but it's one of the signs. But in any case I think you should consult a doctor.

The answers above are good. Stop worrying about brain tumors. Get a medical check-up. And, stop coming up with reasons not to focus on your studies. You may have a neurosis cooking here or something, but, it can wait until you're done with your studies. Study.

Because this forum is limited in how we can best respond to you, my advice is the following:

Do not attempt to self-diagnose potentially dangerous symptomatic indicators of illness. See a doctor immediately.

Listening to us will only either A. cause you vast amounts of worry that will make you think of 'worse case scenarios'... or B. cause you to be complacent in getting urgently needed medical treatment.

If you're suddenly experiencing odd symptoms that have no explanation, you need to see a doctor right away.

It happens to me too. It normally goes away after a while but I know how you feel. The more you drink the more you feel thirsty. Its not a brain tumor.

I doubt seriously that you have a brain tumor. It is summer if you're in the U.S. and people tend to get thirsty more during the summer. If you're really concerned, go get a check-up.
