i tried with different discs and even tried to install using the product id underneath the laptop

you have got pirated version of xp with wrong prod id.

Acer can be a bit funny, you are best to use the image disk that came with it as it will have all the drivers you need as well. If you are in the UK or USA there is a freephone number you can call about licence id's
By the sound of it it isn't a pirate copy. Its worth remembering that product IDs for XP home wont work on XP prof

Sounds like the id does not match the disc.If the laptop is not to old contact the manufacturers and tell them you have lost the original recovery disc(s) and they should send you a new one.If however the operating system was in a petition on the hard drive and you have formatted it, you might have problems.If the petition still exists go into the initial set up (usually press F1 or delete as soon as you turn on)and it should give you a recovery option

Well why not go in for another operating system to go with your windows xp ? You could choose Linux or apple !

your laptop's supposed to have restore cd if you bought that new and not second hand. if you don't, buy another installer (original) so you can have the right product id.

I don't think you can have 2 versions on there.. It may require fine tuning or basically a new pc
