The Lhasa Apso is known in Tibet as ''Bark Lion Sentinel Dog.'' which functions primarily as a police watchdog. It is from Tibet and was accepted for registration by the American Kennel Club in 1935 and was originally shown in the Terrier Group, then reassigned to the Non-Sporting Group in 1959.

The Lhasa Apso comes from Tibet. At one time they were only let out of the country when given as gifts to politicians and celebrities by the Dali Lama. They are cream colored and multi colored small dogs with long shaggy looking hair. They resemble the Shitzu in features.
They have unique personalities and usually favor one person in the family.
