Will shorts and t-shirts do? Or do I need long trousers and warm jackets (more for the South Island I guess)?

You probably won't need them a lot but best bring them, the weather can be fickle and it you decide to do cool adventurous stuff like that may be close to mountains and the weather can turn in just minutes.

Pack the weatherproof, pack the trousers. But most importantly the sun is very very harsh here, lot's of factor 30spf, and the best way to protect yourself is to cover up.

Slip, slop, slap and wrap as they say here
slip on some sunnies
slop on some sunscreen
slap on a hat
and wrap on a shirt or other long sleve top

Feb here is still usually warm (Last Feb was in the high 20's Celsius and low 30's Celsius), always take at least 1 pair of trousers, 1 good shirt and a jacket with you anywhere you travel. In some places you need trousers to get in after a certain time.

It will be their summer at that time of year.
If you plan on doing some walking which I really recommend, there's some of the best scenery on earth.... but pack a fleece and take trousers that dry quickly if you get caught in a downpour. Jeans hold the water so get a light pair of trekking trousers. Also a light waterproof jacket.
To add more warmth but with minimal weight pack a hat and scarf. Weigh noting but make a big difference to the occasional chill. Enjoy

It'll be summer in February in New Zealand. More importantly for the South Island, take waterproofs!

you can check weather.com for the monthly averages for the cities you plan on visiting. I always reccommend packing lightly and just buying what you need if you really need it when you get there (sweater and socks etc.) It will be the middle of summer then, so I doubt there will be alot of cool days unless you're at altitude... I'm no expert tho, so check the weather site and probably newzealand.com (if owned by them) will have info for travelers. Oh and try Travelchannel.com, they should have some good info too.

I'm so jealous! hope you have a fab trip.

Well, that'll be the middle of summer down there, so I wouldn't think you'd need any cold weather gear.
