I want to move to New Zealand, I surf alot, but I've heard rumors about sharks there. Which coast/island is the LEAST inhabited by sharks?

Hi

Just to add some clarification, you have not been misinformed, as any offshore fisherman will attest, there are plenty of sharks around New Zealand. Not only that but along with South Africa and Australia we have our fair share of the Great White; there are even moves afoot to add the Great White to the protected species list and adopt a conservation programme for them!! So your chances of encountering a shark while surfing is not as unlikely as the previous answerers would have you believe. :-)

However, before you make a huge mistake and cross New Zealand off your list of places to visit, I can also tell you that the abundance of other sea life around New Zealand makes it highly unlikely that any sharks (who are not partial to human meat) will let themselves be diverted from the seals and join you on your surfboard. They are plentiful but extremely well fed!! :-)

In the years from 2000-2005, there has been only one recorded attack by a shark on a human being (and none of a human on a shark) in New Zealand waters. The last recorded fatality in New Zealand waters from a shark attack was in 1968.

There's a couple of sites i've listed below.

The first one is offering you the chance to go look for sharks for fun (in case you get fed up with the fact that they are unable to find you) and the second is a breakdown showing locations of shark attacks off New Zealand since 1852. As you will see we can't even make it to one per year!

Kiaora!!! ( Hello )

Sharks???
Where did you hear that rumour???

The best place here in New Zealand to Surf is the ( North Island ) East Coast of Gisborne.

So Far no-one here has been bitten by a shark in fact you'll love it here.

By the way. I heard Australia is ridded with sharks and quite a few people have been bitten and killed from the nasty buggers.

So if you do come to live in NZ, I wish you all the best on your Travel.

Ka Kite!!!! ( Bye )
