I am not sure that an anti-depressant is what you need. When I lost my mother I became very depressed. Therapy worked very well for me. And is covered by most Health insurance plans. If your Doctor does prescribe an anti-depressant. Prozac is usually a well tolerated medication. It does not cause drowsiness like most anti-depressants do. However you need to take it first thing in the morning so it does not interfere with sleep. Paxil is also a good anti-depressant. But it is usually used at bedtime as it causes you to become sleepy. I really would try a therapist first or maybe a combination of both. The only person that can really help you with this decision is your doctor. Go ASAP.
Good luck, your pain will ease with time.

I'm sorry for your loss. However, I know it's tough, but you should not be buying yourself antidepressants. They should be prescribed by a doctor who has assessed you formally.

Also, antidepressants are really only effective if you take them for at least 6 weeks and should be taken for about 6 months if you truly have depression.

One "herbal" remedy which has been proven in clinical trials to improve mood, which you can get over the counter, is St John's Wort - so if you really don't want to see a doctor I'd suggest that you get some of that...

your psychiatrist can do that. they should be the only one doing that. i am not psychiatrist, but antidepressants are for those who have a chemical imbalance in the brain, usually a low level of serotonin. It is a physical malfunction of the body, which is why an antidepressant is being used. Depression is sometimes the bodies normal response to certain situations and so antidepressants should only be used when there is a chemical imbalance.

Sorry 4 your loss,I had the same thing and still am coping.Everything works differently, ask several doctors, and get opinions,Prozac worked for me,if you dont drink,it will all pass faster, and you will remember the good things and smile sooner. If you can admit to the dpression, you are halfway there, lots of these people in yahoo are in denial, why would so many people be up asking strangers QandAs all night!Hope I can see you smile soon,Eddie/67

Antidepressant prescribed by doctors are just to make you sleepy. A walking zombie. No thinking and therefore not depress as the doctor wanted.
Try tyrosine (an amino acid). It works for me and you can get it off the shelf.

Am sorry for your loss. Lexapro has helped me go from a withdrawn, angry ***** to a smiling, calm, nothing can make me upset today, personable person in just a few days!! Best bet is to ask your DR and just try to get through it day, by day.

I am so sorry you lost your mother. You need to see your doctor though. If you really feel you need medication then it should be up to him or her to evaluate your emotional needs right now. It wouldn't be right for any of us to recommend a medication, because one medication might be right for one person, but wrong for another. Besides a lot of us aren't medical professionals. I just know this by personal experience. Please see your doctor. He can help you.
