I think many Christians are just trying to justified their reasons for believing in what they believe in.

good question! I guess we (I'm a Christian) don't have all the answers. You are right, to a non Christian the words alone are meaningless. I wish I knew how to explain in a way that non Christians would understand. The fact that Christians understand does not mean we are better by no means. If a Christian has tried to make you feel that you are "sub standard" because you do not understand then they are mistaken. It is hard to explain. I think if i had a chance to talk to an atheist about why I believe I would not quote scripture , but try to explain what Christianity is really all about. What most churches teach, unfortunately is a mix of old and new testament. That is confusing and wrong. If you read for yourself the new testament and understood what it ment it makes perfect sense, but there is still one thing missing. Faith. Faith I'm afraid is not something that is easy to get ahold of. I have never really sat down and had a good conversation with an atheist and tried to explain my views, but I would be willing to try. The only verses I would quote would probably be the ones that would explain what false teachings you may have heard in the past. I-M serfblues if you would like an adult conversation. If we dis agree then we can agree to disagree

They are trying to impose their insecurities about the unknown on someone who has made their decision to accept another answer! I was raised Christian. I have read the Bible and even have a Catholic school diploma to prove it. I live in an extremely Christian-Right state where people can never believe I'm an Atheist because I am a good person. I do charity work, i help with the social good in my community, and I generally stay out of trouble. When people hear the word Atheist, they automatically think Satan worshiper - so the response is prayer, verse spouting, "let this demon be gone!" My central belief is don't put your hang ups and belief systems on me and I won't put mine on you - basically live and let live. Their basic philosophy is live and let others live as I live. Conversion, proselytizing, saving your soul from eternal damnation (which you're not scared of anyway because you don't believe in hell either!) The bottom line is everyone thinks their way of life is the best or else they wouldn't live that way. So people think that if you don't live that way something is wrong and you must be convinced to believe what they believe. Their beliefs are so steeped in the Bible, so it is their only defense of their way of life. So do what you need to do to get yourself through the day and be a good person - and leave us alone that are doing the same, but in a different way....

I can see your point, because if you have never picked up a bible, never intend to, or just don't believe in the God behind it, I can understand why it would be meaningless to you.

But I always quote the bible to people like you because I would really like for you to someday see that everything you believe, everything you say, everything that happens in the world, and every problem we are facing today is explained in the bible. It has so much wisdom that applies to every day life.

Did you know, for instance, that there is a verse that basically predicted that scientists would come up with the Big bang and evolution, and how much it would damage Christianity? The bible tells all about how the greatest accomplishment of Satan will be making people doubt that God created the world in the first place. That's pretty smart stuff for people to write so long ago, wouldn't you agree?

But don't worry, I won't quote it for you. However, you may be interested to talk to someone who actually understands the bible, and can explain almost everything you've ever wondered with a direct quote from the bible. You might even rethink your non-belief...

It's a race for converts. Some churches are based on money, others really want the atheists to believe there is a God and believe Bible verses back up what they say. Most cases it's not the words that convert it's the Spirit. Without the Spirit and authority these people are wasting their time.

It's been my experience that most Christians, especially Catholics, are insecure people. Christian churches in general spend week after week, day after day for the most dedicated, convincing their listeners that they are inferior and must constantly obey an extreme set of rules and ask for forgiveness from a guy who you owe your entire life to. Christians are finally brainwashed into believing that Jesus has given them everything, and that their hard work means nothing. After all, God has a plan.

The Bible is, what I like to call, a nice story. It's a very long book filled with many characters and adventures. Christianity is the name of the world's biggest book club, forget about Oprah. If you've ever been near a book club, all they want you to do is read the book they're currently reading. They love this book, and their life is more complete because of this book.

Take the book club to an extreme example, and that's why christians always try to win you over with Bible verses.

Some people feel deeply about their religion. They actually think that if they can convince you to believe as they do, that you actually be as blissful as they are.

You may think they are blissful in their ignorance. They my think the same about you. Some people do not believe that God in his infinite wisdom and power can reach people in other ways besides preaching chapter and verse from ancient scrolls.

If they wish to convert you so that you can go to a heaven that you currently believe does not exist, then their intentions are good. If in the end there is no God and there is no Heaven, it does not change the fact that they still wished that you could go to such a place.

Religon comes from a greek word. The original concept was to discibe a belief of how we fit into the universe. Where are we in the big picture. In that regard, environmentalism, astronomy, chemistry, and other sciences could be a form of religion and you will go through life as a target for these people as a potential convert.

They don't care if it is meaningless or not to us. their purpose is to impose their will and belief upon us. They don't realize that there is no "right" belief sytem. Wanna do something fun? if you see a misionary of any kind, from any religion aproaching your door, go get some ketchup, take off your shirt, squirt it on, and if you have a pet, bring your pat and a knife to the door when you answer and announce - oh, your just in time to see the rest of the sacrifice! or, if they aproach you on the street, you can say - we are legion we are many. I've never actually done that but it sounds funny.

This is my favorite Bible Verse: Exodus 32:27 He said to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Put your sword on your side, each of you! Go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill your brother, your friend, and your neighbor.'"

Why don't they use that one? Don't you feel the love?

Anyway, they always take the verse out of literary and historical context, so the original meaning is lost too. Strange tactic!

Atheists have no proof that "God" doesn't exist
Cristians have no proof that "God" does exist
and there is no proof saying that the bible is not a work of fiction.

this is important for cristians to realize, when they share their beliefs they need to give more or less reasons WHY they believe, maybe people would be a little bit more respectful and open to those suggestions.

but i will still think you are full of ****. =)

i think its more of a thing like this is their beliefs ... this is What Gods word says about what you just asked .... i showed you so in the great judgement you cant say that you were never given the opportunity to hear the truth ... so you heap up condemnation to yourself .... dont be all pompous and jump to the conclusion that they are trying to convert you ... only a proud atheist would come to that conclusion .... they are telling you the truth so that when you look at them in that great day then they will not be blamed by you ... so get off your high horse.
