Generally speaking there is no lemon law that applies to private sales. Lemon laws only apply to new vehicles that are still under the manufacturer's warranty.
At least one state (MA) does provide that a car must pass the state's emissions test and makes no exception for private sales but only allows a very short time to have the test done. The vehicle must actually fail the test and if it's not running it can't be tested. Catch 22.
Unless the seller guaranteed the vehicle (highly unlikely for a $600.00 vehicle) it is strictly "as is" and you have no recourse.

In most cases, an honest person would either refund the money or help you take care of the problem with the truck. In other cases, you would have to take the person to court to get your money back or the vehicle fixed. If you truly had the problem just after taking ownership, I think you would have a good case in any court. I'd contact the person you bought the truck from, and see how that goes. That person might also know any quirks or tricks that might make your ownership of the vehicle easier.

While a particular state might have a unique law to cover this, for the most part no...Unless the seller stipulated in writing to any warrantee private transactions are governed by "CAVEAT EMPTOR"-let the buyer beware... you should have had the vehicle checked out by a mechanic prior to purchasing it.

laws very from state to state, if you got a receipt stating, bought in as is condition with no guarantee, i'd say no but, if the seller gave you a verbal or written guarantee then I would say the law is on your side. (at least in michigan), Call the D M V or sec. of state office in your area and they can tell you the law in your state. good luck
