The morning alarm is ringing, but your eyes refuse to rise and shine. They're so swollen shut with sticky, crusty discharge, it feels like the sandman pasted your lids with glue.
It can be alarming to have to pry open your eyes in the morning, but eye discharge is rarely harmful and is simply part of your body's natural defense system.

it is a form of mucus that drains from the sinuses through the tear ducts, usually happens at night because of allergies in the air that irritate the sinus and or eye lids.

We've always called it "sleep", a noun... as in "rub the sleep from your eyes." the technical may be different... probably lacrimal discharge or mucropurulent discharge.
