Itaewon, Kangnam, and Hungdae are cool areas to hang out. Itaewon gets the foriegner crowd, Kangnam is the upper scale area and Hungdae is just flat out cool.

Good luck!

hongdae is near a university, and the bars are kickin'

apgujung is where the rich hang-out. There are some nice restaurants here, but I could never afford to party there.

Itewon is great if you are just being introduced to Seoul.... but get out of there as soon as you can. It's a slum.

Im not sure what you're into.
There's a great Jazz bar in Apkujeong called 'Once in a Blue Moon'.. they have live jazz and good cocktails.

Around the university areas is where you will find the funkier of the bars, cafes and restaurants. I personally like Hong Dae area... it's an arty area, very creative. Good vibes, and a bit of everything on offer.
E-Dae has good cafe's too.
