My sheltie 7 mths old has a healthy shiny black coat but has frizzy and dry fur at the hindquarters. They are also a mixture of black and white is this normal? If this is so, does it mean that i have to cut it short?

puppies change their coat from a soft puppy coat to a harsher adult coat. this could be part of your pup's normal coat change, or it could be a result of her diet. you should feed her a very high quality diet with plenty of fat and oils for her coat. shelties are meant to have a harsh outer coat and a soft, fuzzy undercoat to protect them from the harsh winters in the Scottish islands. find an adult sheltie in your area and compare, or ask local sheltie fanciers if her coat is normal. it's hard to say without seeing it.

most sheltie owners do not cut the coat short, as it is supposed to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer and cutting it short interferes with the protection.

No, Sheltie owners do not approve of cutting the fur short and would never shave their Sheltie! I own two and one is 7 months like yours. I use the "undercoat rake" to groom them every other day. I bathe them with Oatmeal Shampoo at least once a month. And if your Sheltie is black and white, that's called "bi-black", but if you Sheltie is black, tan, and white this is called "tri".

You can cut it to keep it groomed. Also, keep in mind that it's still a puppy and the fur will be shed. Keep feeding your puppy healthy foods (Nutro/Timberwolf) to help improve the skin and coat.

The hair texture is supposed to be like that on her hindquarters, all Shelties have hair like that there.
