Is it allowed for a person/family to buy & consume meat from a grocery store or butcher (i.e. chicken, beef, turkey) when there are no halal meat stores in the city/town/village? Also, what if a person is too poor to afford halal... it's quite expensive, about 3 times more!

I think you are talking about "Zabiha", not "Halal" since Halal means something that is allowed for us to eat and there are many things that are NOT animals are Halal.

I don't know where did you get the "3 times more" satistics but yeah it's a little more expensive than the one that's available in some super markets.
There are conditions when a person is allowed to eat drink forbidden (Non-Halal) food but in this case, I can suggest to stick with fish, vegitables or just drive to few extra miles to get the Zabiha meat.

well ALLAH is ALL-MERCIFUL, that is why depending on the state u are in He has given u so many options.

non- halal is not to be consumed. but when there is nothing left to eat, absolutely nothing, then it is allowed. then haram is halal.

but brother, dont u think it will be better if u have veggies rather than try non-halal.?

if u r really left with no option then its ok to eat that meat (chicken, goat, cow etc) we say Allah o Akber before slaughtering any animal and that non-muslim ppl do not do. so make sure that u say Bismillah Arehman ar Rahim and eat. u can eat more vegetables, fruits. other thing is u can consult a good islam scholar or Moulvi in mosque for this.

non-halal meat is allowed only if you have nothing left to eat and you are dying to eat something.
Dont modify rules with your convinience
If someone cant afford halal meat he/she shud switch to vegetables
hope that helps
