Witchcraft is not a religion and has no relation to Satanism. Witchcraft is the use of sorcery and/or magick. A witch is a practitioner of the religion Wicca. Wicca is a rather amazing faith. It is simple in form and considers all things sacred. Being sacred all things should be treated with honor and respect.
Wicca is a religion influenced by pre-Christian beliefs and practices of western Europe that affirms the existence of supernatural power (as magic) and of both male and female deities who inhere in nature and that emphasizes ritual observance of seasonal and life cycles.
Satanism is defined as obsession with or affinity for evil; specifically : the worship of Satan marked by the travesty of Christian rites. This definition in my understanding of Satanists is incorrect. Satanists believe that we are built to do what pleases us. That God would not restrict us from being the instinctual people that we are. There philosophy is based on one simple question: Why would God make us this way just to tell us we should not practice our true instinctual form?
The reason people still believe that Witchcraft is a satanic practice revolves around several passages in the bible. These passages state all sorcerors are using a force outside of God to do their bidding destructive or otherwise. Furthermore those who practice Witchcraft have gotten this negative title from con-artists in the mid-evil era. They would often charge a fee for services such as speaking with the dead, consulting the stars for an understanding of the future and so on, people with no real magickal talent. The misconception is in what the bible is actually saying. Jesus was a very smart man. He had placed in the bible several messages saying murder all sorcerors and mediums. This honestly had nothing to do with magick. He wanted the con artists killed for ripping of the people who worked very hard. Unfortunately not many people consider that the bible was written a few thousand years ago, nor that it may contain passages ment as messages to people of that time period. They may not understand what a con artist is, so Jesus had them referenced as they are known, sorcerors and mediums.
To give some truth so you can see for yourself I will offer several passages from the bible:
exodus 22:18
leviticus 19:26
leviticus 20:6
deuteronomy 18:10-12
1 samuel 28:1-25
2 chronicles 33:7-9
there are 11 more past this with referance to sorcerors within the bible. none of them are good, furthermore these are among the 17 total that I have found. There very well could be more. I know that you as a Wiccan and/or Pagan would proberably prefer not to read the bible. However the answer to your question is within the holy bible as it definitively connects Witchcraft to Satanism.
Hails to the learned heart,
Silence

I'm probably going to be rated down by staunch Christians, but...
In the Middle Ages, witchcraft was associated with Satanism as a way to weaken non-christian religions. If you can convince people that "their" religion is evil, you can, in theory, increase compliance with what you believe is correct.
Witchcraft is actually a variation on Wicca and some Pagan religions... while some will always believe that these are "wrong", what you're experiencing is an early attempt by the Catholic church to demonize other religions to increase their own membership.
The inverted Star symbol is actually an early pro-feminine symbol... by linking it to Satan, it became easier to ostracise the non-believers.
If necessary, I'll provide sources later -- it's late and I wanted to answer this before hitting bed; but everything I've stated can be found in Wikipedia or similar trusted documents regarding early religion.

Because Christians don't care what you think and believe -- only their particular error is 'correct'. So they judge you by that communal hallucination of theirs. In their little hallucination, everything that isn't Their God is Their Devil. Since you aren't Their God, you must logically be Their Devil, wether you admit it or not.
And careful, some witches DO use blood rituals and life rituals. Perhaps not the wiccans, but wicca is only a subset of the Craft. The Craft is much bigger than one particular religion.
Of course, atheism is pretty unifying. There's nothing to debate when there's no holy text at all and no unprovable dogma's.
Thank god for Atheism. ;)

I guess its because the stereotype of a witch is that old hideous devil-loving hack riding a broom in the air and the stereotype of evil freaks still affects most people's views of witchcraft...
Expect a "Christian" or a "Muslim" or even an "Atheist" to respond maliciously and cruelly to this question...
Personally I dont mind again what one believes so long as one does not go around enforcing their beliefs on others or hurting people...as for me Christ is the only way to go...
Peace be with you

I believe that people are drawing a connection between witchcraft and satanism since both are strictly forbidden by the Bible. I know that there is a difference, and I preach that there is a difference in my Bible classes that address the issue. But, both are still sinful acts and in that understanding is where the average Christian could become confused.

Same here. Satanists really wish we weren't confused with Wiccans, and don't want to be associated with worshipping any kind of god or goddess. Then again, the frustration on your end will cease, when you realize that to Xtians, ANYTHING that is not Xtian is evil. So it is basically pointless to argue with Xtian morons who are too dumb, stubborn, or lazy to learn about Wicca and satanism before making generalizations.

Witchcraft is a way that Satan uses it's followers to worship something or somebody other than the one true God and Jesus. Satan knows that this way of worship is just evil enough in The Lords eyes to send your soul to Hell with him. Satan is a liar and has you duped

I think Halloween & other crap like that, plant negative images in peoples minds. If more people incorporated the belief in mother earth, the world would be in a lot better shape. I have never understood Christianities lack of interest in the environment.

Satanism, witchcraft...
The Bible calls it all idolotry becasue you worship a false god.
But you're not alone. Any worship of any kind that is not directed to God is considered idolotry.
Repent and you won't be lumped together with other non-believers.
