I am a college student. I am trying to get financial aid. I didn't work last year so they are asking for my husbands tax return. HE filed head of household last year. We weren't "legally" seperated but seperated for about 6 months. Will this hurt me? Can anyone help.

If you did not live in the household for the last 6 months of the year, and he had a dependent living with him (if a parent was the dependent, doesn't need to live with him) then if he paid more than half the expenses of the household for the year, he can legally file head of household even if you were not legally separated.

Whether it will hurt you for financial aid is up to the school - talk to them.

sure, you need to be concerned. Your "preparer" set you up for tax fraud. in case you fail to restoration this and anticipate the IRS to word, you will discover you're barred from claiming EIC for 10 years and owe no longer in basic terms the surplus refund lower back, yet an added 20% accuracy penalty. Your "preparer" might the two think of which you would be able to report HOH one greater time interior the 300 and sixty 5 days you get married (truthfully no longer real!) or that she's doing you a choose submitting an unlawful return to get you a greater refund. Did she even sign the return? If she did no longer, she's fortunately putting you as much as take the autumn. (I word you say you called her and he or she claimed your husband's non-binding W-4 is why she theory it grow to be ok.) additionally, look at your tax return. Did she incorporate the ten% penalty for cashing out the 401K early? After her huge mistake with submitting prestige, i might question each line on the return.

head of household is: taking care of 50% financially for a dependant person or living by yourself.
so you were seperated after he filed his taxes? and since you didnt work at all, the school wants to see what money you had last year to live??
I would ask the school ; what would last year EX-husband's income taxes mean.?
since you didnt work at all, and didnt have to file for taxes yourself.
so you relied on him to buy everything while you lived with him, before seperating? how are you supporting yourself now on your own? what income? this income could be put on taxes for this year.
