I don't think Judas kept the 30 pieces of silver. I don't believe that he turned in Jesus for the reward money at all... but the law required that the reward be paid anyway...

I think that Judas truly believed that he was saving Jesus from torture ... I think that they promised him that Jesus would be executed quickly if he was turned in instead of them having to go out and hunt him down...

of course... I could be totally wrong and Judas could have spent the money on a nice donkey to get out of town.

The potters field that other people have answered is correct. The religious leaders paid Judas his money, but later his guilt ate at him and he wanted to return the money. The leaders refused because it was wrong in their eyes to except money that had been tainted, so Judas threw it at them. The money was picked up (by who I don't know) and used for the field.
