If you have the means and resources and think you have a better survival rate by attacking then by all means hurt the bastard real bad.
But like my uncle used to always say, "When a guy pulls out a gun, shut the fu*k up and run".
No sense getting killed over stupid crap like spilled beer.
Same with the knife. Hollywood always tells us we can knock the knife out of their hand with a fast kick but this never happens. you do that, and chances are you're gonna get stabbed in the leg.
Running is sometimes the best answer.

I asked my father something similar to this a while ago. He responded: "Can you hit faster than a bullet?"
If you can catch him off guard, yeah, do that and make your shot count. Even killing him may be necessary; just do whatever it takes to win.
One exception I'd like to point out.... if he's pointing the gun at you from a distance.... get under cover if you can! Hand-to-hand combat with him in that situation requires that you run at him, or approach him in some way, and that would just make it easier for him to shoot you before you reach him.
As for a knife... yeah, you can do whatever it takes to get the guy down. Same as with a gun.
Actually, I'd hurt an attacker real bad no matter whether he used a gun, knife, lead pipe, or just his hands. I don't know what his intent is, so even if I had to kill him, I'd do it.

I've trained this type of scenario before and your options are quite limited. Depends on the distance between you and the bad guy. If you have some distance, the #1 rule is "get to cover". Put something between you and them that will stop or slow down a bullet. A car is the best example. I have trained some close distance techniques and am approaching this from a law enforcement perspective. This is basically taught as disarm the subject, control the weapon, and draw your weapon. The prevailing lesson of it all is this: WIN THE FIGHT! If it comes down to you or them going home at night, who do you pick? Win by any means necessary. I've been lucky enough to never be involved in a shooting, but I've had to draw my weapon on several occasions. Tense moments for sure.

I've been stabbed once, shot at twice, piped & baseball batted on numerous occasions. Thus this was the life I chose. In each case it took more then one a$shole to confront me & although they might have won the battle they never , ever won the war. Weapons are for sissys or when your outnumbered. Remember your body is a lethal weapon, just ask the 14 people I put in the hospital. Balls to the wall.....always.

I was shot in a scuffle when two Wah Cheng punks drew pistols on me. Without martial arts I'd probably be dead. I took the pistols and knocked the punks down. Then, I rushed to get medical attention, for I had a bullet hole near my navel. If I had more time, I would've taken stronger action, but staying alive beats taking revenge.

Any time you feel you are in fear for your life then you are at your labled "point of no return". But you do have to be aware of the situation... is it to scare you and maybe take your wallet? or do you feel there is eminent threat and you will be killed if you do not take action? The best answer in regards to hurting him bad lies within your conscience, your ability/training and most important, the laws of the state you reside.

If a person draws a gun on you that person has made a choice you don't know what that persons state of mind is or what they plan on doing. take no chances and do what you deem necessary to get yourself out of the situation. My opinion if some one pulls a gun on me their dead

Personally, u pull any weapon "on me" and u BETTER use it. Most people who have weapons as cowards anyway, so they don't have any intention to actually use it. You are correct though. It is 50/50, but most people who are part of that "I'm going to use this weapon 50%" don't wait to get THAT close. They want to put you to sleep before that.

If you are faced with a weapon do what you must to survive. If it means giving up your material things, do it.
If the weapon wielder does not want your stuff do what you must to survive. If that means hurting them do it. if it means running do it. If it means playing dead, do it.
Your goal in a situation is to not get hurt, your goal is not to hurt the person. Stick to the goals.
