We have been trying to pin down exactly what this government is fighting for.
1--There was no WMD in Iraq, so I have no idea why we're fighting there.
2--We have no vested interest in Hezbollah or Israel, so there is absolutely no reason for the US to be mixed up in that situation.
As for what kind of nation we are, we have a secular government and are NOT a Christian nation. We have a few extremely vocal rightwing fundamentalist Christian nutcases, but do not base your opinion of the American people on those few crazies.

Oct. 1983 Marine Barracks Beirut Lebanon 283 DEAD
Dec. 1988 Pan Am Flt 103 Lockerbie Scotland 244 DEAD
Feb. 1993 World Trade Center NYC Ny 6 DEAD
Oct. 1993 Somalia, Africa, American Rangers and Delta Force are killed by rebels. Supplied and trained by Osama. Over a thousand DEAD 19 of them American soldiers
Jun. 1996 Khobar Towers Dhahran, Sa 19 DEAD
Aug. 1998 US Embassies Kenya/Tanzania 224 DEAD
Oct. 2000 USS Cole Aden Yemen 17 DEAD
All these were attacks by terrorists against the USA and our allies, and every single president did nothing.
All they need is enough money and the right contacts to get a WMD. And literally more than half the US population would be no more.
So now we are in Iraq. Killing terrorists. But the more we kill the more we capture, the more we find out info on there operations, the easier we can shut them down.
If we leave Iraq, Iran would double in power. Now this is very bad b/c if they double in power so will the terrorists. Iran supplies them with weapons, money and man power. We cant leave.
So to answer your question, to fight terror. Their a larger threat than you think.

When you ask what does the US for and why the US fights all over the world in so conflicts that are not there own you must look at the past to understand.
In the first two world wars the United States of America decided not to intervene calling it a European matter. In both cases The US eventually joined the wars and contributed greatly if not mainly to the victories that were achieved.
After countless millions died in those two world wars the US made a bold decision. The United States of America decided to intervene when conflicts are still small using the "weight" of a superpower to quell conflicts.
If conflicts are ended when still minor they will not and cannot become world wars. In this way although it may not always be obvious the US is acting as the only country that really cares about this planet and the freedom of its people.
The US just might have saved millions upon millions of people from death and maybe just maybe thanks to the US Einstein would be wrong in his prediction - "I do not know with what weapons World War 3 will be fought, but World War 4 will be fought with sticks and stones.".
PS - I am not American.

We fight because we have forgoten leasons learned in the past. We fight because we stoped having the heart of children. We stoped fighting for love because we stoped teaching are children the difference from right and wrong and letting them make the choice by themselfs. There are so many reasons we fight for wrong reasons but the main one is lack of education we stoped learning because we thought we were Gods and no longer needed it and could live a life of party without advancing. Also we stoped giving more then we have and started to spend on us more then the world has. Basicaly the US became selfish and greedy. Its never to late to change things and its never to late to say your sorry. It takes a big person to admit they have made a mistake but plz look inside your hearts and realize the truth we are all at fault and its wonderful. We will make it through this its almost over infact just believe. Never stop making wishes and dreams and learning / loving.

The only thing the USA fights for is FREEDOM, and the Islamo-facist basturds are NOT going to take it away.
Hezbollah fights to kill innocent people, they were NOT fighting for their land, they are fighting to destroy Israel.
Their stated wish is to KILL every Jew they can and to wipe the Nation of Israel off the map of the world.
No one was attacking the Islamo-facist terrorists of Hezbollah, it was Hezbollah who ignorantly and purposefully attacked Israel.
What isn't CLEAR about that??????????????
Without prejudice, just the truth. Read the Koran, check out Mohammed, get the truth, it is there..... Islam is NOT a religion of peace, not in any way, shape, or form.

Sure we might be so deeply involved in the middle east for oil. OK, in fact I'll say that if there wasn't oil there that things would be a lot different.
I might disagree with Bush on many things and not always have the highest regard for the things he does, but I will say this, the man DOES believe what he says and does 100%.

We fight for US interest, in the end we care more about ourselves than we do the rest of the World.
And why shouldn't we, we are the people who left the OLD world and we are constantly criticized and mocked and called upon to save the OLD world.
We are arrogant because we can be, we do what we want because no one can stop us.

Survival. In case you haven't noticed the Muslims are prepared to kill ANYONE (that includes you if do not follow their religion) that is an infidel, not just the Jews. In case you haven't noticed, they have been attacking us here and overseas for a long time. So, I am going to stick with survival.
