Historical Fiction novel written by James Michener.
Max von Sydow played the role of the Reverend Hale.
As in all of Mr. Michener's works, he puts a great deal of effort in ensuring integrity of historical facts. A great deal of Hawaiian history and mythology is cited in this novel. The characters portray many of the early citizens who wittingly, and for the most part - unwittingly, influenced the course of Hawaii's emergence from archaic myth to industrialization in such a short period of time.
One of my favorite readings as well as one of my favorite cinema pieces. Forgive my exuberance, I wrote a term paper on Hawaii's colonization when I was in high school and used many of Mr. Michener's references to formulate and substantiate my hypothesis.

James Michener wrote the book, and it's a good one - I've read it at least twice.
