A man and his son were in an automobile accident. The man died on the way to the hospital, but the boy was rushed into surgery. The emergency room surgeon said "I can't operate, that's my son!" How is this possible?

Apparantly the surgeon was his mother - though to the introspective and enquiring person the surgeon could have also been his foster father or step father ... and as far as I know .. the word Surgeon applies to both sexes so it could have been his mother or step mother or any one of these.
So though the riddle has many possibilities - the phraseology of the question stated absolute truths without any clues to other other acquired parentage - so the answer would have to be his Mother.
And of course the first person to answer it should get the 10 Points - which is not me with this long winded analysis Ha Ha
