Iris is the generic name of a flowering herb.
It is widely cultivated for its attractive flowers.
They come in different colours.
It is a monocotyledonous plant closer to lilies.
The family name is Irridiaceae.
They are cultivated either with the help of their tubers ( Tuberous Irises) or rhizomes ( Rhizomatous Irises.)
It can be put in the category of ' most beautiful flowers' .
They have nothing to do with orchids except for the fact that both are monocotyledonous species, and both have bilaterally symmetrical flowers.

I am not sure of the technicalities, but I know that they grow from "tubers" or rhizomes and are perennials---but beware if you handle them, as they secrete a fluid which causes extreme dermatitis to some people! (Imagine poison ivy rash X 5!)
