One has to accept by faith that it is the inspired word of God...all of it...not part of it. If one part is inaccurate, then you might as well toss the whole thing out because you won't know what to believe.
Interpretation of the Bible is a whole other can of worms and people misinterpret the meaning of the strict laws of the Old Testament very often and it seems to be a contradiction with the New Testament-but it is not. One has to look at the big picture and that is very hard to do with a book that is so packed...but rest assured, nothing in the Bible has been disproved and many things (particularly the historical accounts) have been proven.
People who claim that the Bible is not the word of God are generally not people of faith, so how can you believe what they say? And people who do believe are people of faith, so how can you believe them?
You have to decide whether or not you will accept it as God's word and 'lean not on your own understanding'...either path you choose will be one of faith. Yes, even atheism is a faith-faith in the non-existence of any sort of Deity when there is no more evidence to support their claim than there is of the existence of a Deity.
If you have a question about a specific passage, I'd be more than willing to share my thoughts. I am no expert, but I have a better understanding of the word than many people. Feel free to contact me.

People define inspiration from god in many different ways. Terrorism, the KKK, the fight of the Protestants and catholics were all supposedly inspired by god, yet they brought about death, destruction and fear into the world.
You believe what you want to believe, if you take the Bible as the truth then that's ok. However, I have issue with the fact that I would be considered as less than and not as an equal to my husband, or that I could not work, or vote, or do many of my other everyday things. I am a Christian Catholic (many see the 2 as different), but I do not believe the Bible word for word. I believe in the message of love and peace and that it is a great piece of history. However, it was written by man and as I've said time and again, man is fallible. Men wrote it and they wrote it the way they wanted to see the religion.

No where does it say in the bible (the older versions 50+ years old) that the words within are written by god. It is suggested that the first books of the OT are written by Moses. That is a long time span for him to recall Adam and eve. The last book of the bible was written 95 years AFTER the death of Christ, so it wasn't written by any of the desciples. The books themselves were written long after the apostles themselves were dead. Most of the stories were related by word of mouth from one person to the next. As you know you send a simple message down the line by the time it reaches you it doesn't even reflect the original. Ask if you family has an heirloom bible. It is usually one that a great great grand parent had. If there is one find out who has it and take a look at it. You will see books in there that the versions of today do not have. Why? it is called telling the story to fit the tellers view. The KJV, was rewritten by King James of Scotland (or England I don't quite remember) to fit what HE believed not what is the truth.
The words of god be them written or spoken are to powerful to be contained, even if they are "inspired". The bible is the account of man by man, not god. God is the color of water and so is his teachings.

You asked a questioning for both sides of the fence at one time? The believers and the disbelievers.
Too, if you are going to ask questions, at lest familiarize yourself enough with the subject matter so that your question is meaningful, not insulting and does not reflect negatively on yourself.
Finally, the issue to you should not be about what some people say. If you are going to let every little thing that some people say sway your judgment, then you are going to be jerked up and down all over this planet.
Since your question is about the bible, it would seem to me that your real concern would be about your belief, what ever that is and not about what some people say.
If authenticity is an issue with you, do YOUR homework!

lets just start with the surmise that some people will believe anything they read in print. and go on from there. People are gullible, there have always been people who could cheat others out of their life savings, its in every society, and every book of tales has something about it. the emperors new clothes, jack and the beanstalk, the princes and the pea etc. they all tell us the same things the bible does. The bible just uses bigger words, more colourful characters, and better heroes and villains. Its just another series of fairy tales with a moral at the end. written by people to keep other people in line.

The Bible is a collection of stories and accounts made by people who originally lived in times of God on Earth and later, as approved, collected and edited by the Catholics. There are about 30+ other books that were banned by the Catholics.
Protestants, essentially, accepted the Catholic edition, making small changes in thrust and meaning.

These people wrote down books saying they were inspired by God. How is this any different than Andrea Yates saying God commanded her to kill her kids? How are we supposed to know these people were truly inspired by God? Many scientific and historical facts are inaccurately portrayed in the Bible; anything God-inspired would surely have to be accurate.
This is part of the many reasons I left the faith four years ago.

OH DUUUUDEE HERE WE GO AGAIN.
MAN, MY FINGERS ARE GETTING SORE ON THIS.
Okay, first you gotta remember that people come here to express opinions and opinions are like armpits..
EVERYBODY HAS A COUPLE AND SOME OF THEM STINK.
Now, there were major predictions in the bible that involved whole kingdoms rising and falling and it depicted them in detail as to what their emblems would be. It did that hundreds of years in advance. That is indisputable.
Atheists hate it when Christians bring that up because they cant explain it they can only try to discredit it. The book of Daniel depicted the rise and fall of Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and the Roman Empire.
Pretty amazing for a person who lived hundreds of years before it happened. Daniel got that info from someone who knew what was going to happen.
Think about it.
I suggest you read your bible everyday and talk to God. He can do things that let you know you are talking to the right God if you just have faith. Faith is like a muscle. Exercise it and it will grow.
Don't have a bible?

My encyclopedia set is an account of several different people, none of whom were inspired by God; yet I have good reason to believe that the information contained therein is factual and accurate. I believe what it says in my encyclopedia set because those who wrote it wrote with authority - with the training and education required to write intelligently about many topics. I find it to be very reliable. It is important to note that an encyclopedia is not a perfect document, however.
The Bible, in my opinion, is reliable in a similar way: the men (NOT God) who wrote it wrote with authority. In this case, I believe they were inspired by God to write what was on their hearts about their relationship (both individual and collective) with the Divine. As men with biases and emotions and other limitations, their writings are not perfect documents; however, I find them to be highly reliable.
Written texts do not have to be perfect works breathed by God in order to be reliable.

It is "Faith" for a reason. To ask why people keep saying it is the same as asking why people keep believing in curses or believe in Santa Claus. Because they want to. For some, It is easier than to actually study it and decide. For others, it is just refusing to believe.
