My dog, Maggie, does the same thing. But she's really sneaky about it. I never see her do it. But when I dig with a shovel in that area she's there watching. And when it pops up she grabs it and scurries off. She did the samething with a big chunk of ham I gave her too. When another dog is around and gets too close to the area she leads them off in another direction. Crazy dogs. Maybe I'll find out the answer to that by you asking. Thanks.

They will usually find them later. Its instinct to keep the food that they can't finish at one time from being found by another animal. The thing with domestic dogs is they usually don't experience that extreme hunger that dogs in the wild (a wolf or fox) would experience and sometimes forget about the bone.

I could be rude and suggest that dogs are dumb as stumps - but that would be rude. Fact is, they bury food or other items to hide them from other dogs - generally for *short-term* security. If for some reason the dog doesn't get back to it soon, they forget where it is. Same with squirrels and nuts - they never find most of them again, for which the trees are immensely grateful.

Saving them up for a rainy day don't worry he'll find the bones again.
