How can we feel pain in hell when pain is an attribute of our physical bodies. It just doesn't make sense.
From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pain
"The perception of pain occurs when the nociceptors are stimulated and transmit signals through sensory neurons in the spinal cord. These neurons release glutamate, a major exicitory neurotransmitter that relays signals from one neuron to another. The signals are sent to the thalamus, in which pain perception occurs. From the thalamus, the signal travels to the somatosensory cortex in the cerebrum, where the pain is localised, and the individual becomes fully aware of the pain."

The spirit can be grieved.
It may be a somewhat different experience in that our bodies will be changed. But whatever they are changed to will be created by the same Creator Who created our current bodies.
I think part of the reason we are told so little really about what life will be like after death is because our focus should be what we do in this life. I trust that God will handle those details.
With just the information I have, I know that I don't want to be separated from God to find out about the specifics of the pain as an eternal consequence of disobedience to Him.
In the end, will it matter to you HOW you feel pain, or that you will feel it?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not wishing it on anybody. I just think the how is not the significant question.

Well for one Marty, you are not thinking fourth dimensionally. With God (which you obviously do not know) ALL things are possible. And the bible teaches us that we will not enter into the next world with our present bodies, we will enter in the spirit. Therefore your long drawn out explanation and definition of how the body receives and determines pain is moot and useless.
The bible also tells us that if you go to Hell you will burn for eternity and there will be no hope of ever getting out. If you are truly an atheist and do not believe in God, why do you ask questions about Him and what is taught and believed by Christians. Just live your life to the fullest because I am here to tell you that there is room for one more in Hell and you are headed straight down the wide path.

Honestly, I have trouble believing that Hell is truly as it is described. The fact of the matter is, when you die, your physical body is left behind. Therefore, there should be no physical pain. Only spiritual pain. However, it is completely possible that you are sort of given a body in Hell - an illusion of a physical body that allows you to feel pain.
I don't think that spiritual pain is the cause of physical pain, however. Those are two separate things.

Well technically, if we have consciousness but no physical body we could still imagine pain since ultimately it is the mind that perceives pain based on signals it is receiving.
However I would suggest the "burning in hell" stuff is really a symbolic stand-in for "spiritual anguish". And I don't believe in a hell anyway, but rather that when we die our consciousness survives and without having a body, we will find ourselves in a spiritual condition that reflects our true nature. So some will experience spiritual anguish while others experience spiritual bliss.

There's a difference between anguish and agony. Moreover, pain is a physical sensation, but we say that because it's caused by physical triggers. If the mind is a spiritual thing, it's theoretically possible to have spiritual triggers causing pain. But that's a whole new can of worms...

Man's knowledge is foolishness to God. There will be mental and physical pain for sure. If He can create such an amazing body phisiologicallly I'm sure He has the spiritual one down pat.

Hell is a place of spiritual torment, not physical. Man's spirit is designed to be eternal; it does not die.
Where do you feel emotional torment? Might it be described as "hot?"
Expect the same due to separation form God, and everything, everybody else.

Because you can't feel pain in Hell!! You are dead. You know nothing. Hell is your common grave. Read up on it if you don't believe me. Britannica or a good concordance will help.

So when your boyfriend / girlfriend / whatever breaks up with you, you feel no pain or remorse? What about when a family member dies? Hell is also torture, emotional and otherwise.

We believe that Jesus ate with the disciples after he was resurrected, and there is to be a wedding and feast in heaven. Since He is the only one that has returned to tell us, I'll believe him !!
