Eating a high fiber diet, consisting of 50-70% of raw foods incl; large amts of fruits & veges, brown rice, lentils & potatoes. For protein, eat beans & legumes, fish, raw nuts & seeds, skinless white turkey or chicken, low fat yogurt (& tofu if interested). The fruits & veges including potatoes need to be organic! Omit wheat from the diet completely, there are wheat alternatives tho. Distilled water is best & if not available use purified water. Eating small meals thru-out the day is best. Try to teach your child breathing exercises (like a game) Hold breath for 30 sec every half hour, try to do this consistently for 30 days, this helps increase the oxygen levels in the brain, which will help increase brain power. Vitamins are essential, Calcium 375 mgs daily, B6 10 mg 2 or 3 times daily must take Magnesium 200 mg daily with the Calcium & B6, Pantothenic Acid (B5) 100 mgs daily & Ginkgo Biloba (herb) 30 mgs 2 times daily to start, with age can increase. Studies have show this vitamin & herbal regimen produce good results, often with dramatic improvement....especially if you have eliminated foods with chemical additives, packaged & processed foods incl sweets, chocolate, carbonated beverages, canned foods, salt (use sea salt if necessary), sugar ( can use Agave Syrup, sold in health food stores), saturated fats, white flour, anything with artificial color & preservative, no bacon, no cold cuts (has nitrates very bad), no fried foods, gravies, ham, luncheon meats, no sausage, and no dairy. If the child has trouble at nite going to bed or troubled sleep thru the nite, you can give them Melatonin 1 hr before bedtime, start with a half of a mg (milligram) if that doesnt help, ok to increase to 1 mg.
This may sound extreme, but it is possible to do because I have done it! I just found a good health food grocery store that carries what I need including organic food, vitamins & herbs. It can be a bit expensive, but it's well worth it.

I've heard different things about the gluten free/cassein free diet, it works for some and not for others, just like anything else. For my son, age 4, I use products from Melaleuca, vitamins and supplements, and we literally saw progress overnight. His vocabulary improved, cognitive skills, sleep patterns, sensory issues, everything. I just started using these for a boy I babysit, and again, we're seeing dramatic results. Also, we recently removed red food dye from our diets, and are seeing some progress in his behavior. Someone suggested using Melatonin... we do that occasionally, when he is really out of control, just enough to take the edge off his behavior, not enough to knock him out. You really have to be specific about what diets you're talking about, there are a lot out there, and it seems like every parent I talk to uses something different. You won't find a lot on studies on these, but personal experience. Hope this helps, and I'm here if you ever want to brainstorm.

I don't know from personal experience about that but one's diet and various supliments can have positive and negative effects depending on what it contains. If the doctor says that it couldn't hurt to try, as long as all nutrition needs are met theres no harm in giving it a try.
