Have the vet or groomer show you. It is not hard, but takes a little practice. Basically, you are feeling for the full glands at the 4:00 and 8:00 positions when looking at the rectum. Getting your thumb and forefinger in front of them and gently squeezing and pulling towards you should empty them if the glandular material is thin. Sometimes the material is very thick, like toothpaste, and can be difficult or painful to express. I empty my dogs at bathtime. No big deal.

I bring my chi to the vet to get his anal glands expressed. He only needs it done every several years or so but I realize some dogs have more problems with it. My vet only charges me 10 - 15 dollars to have this done. I give my chi's their vaccinations and such myself but I would never express their anal glands by myself. It's hard if you don't know what your doing and can hurt the dog, also it takes two people, one to hold the dog and one to express. If you feel like you can do it I would take him to the vet and have a vet show you how to do it properly but do it while at the vets office so they can supervise and make sure your doing it right.

I keep trying to express my pug's anal glands but am not successful. I have watched dog's glands being expressed but it doesn't seem to work for my female pug and yet she scoots on the carpet, often. Could someone please explain to me how to do a pug's anal glands expressing?

Take your index finger and your thumb, and place them on each side of the a--hole, and squeeze. Don't get your face down there though, or you might get a squirt in the face. I would do it in the bathtub, or shower.
