Massage therapists, sports creams and medications are available to relieve sore, tight muscles. Before spending money, try these simple remedies at home.

Steps:
1. Apply an ice pack for 20 minutes to any area that hurts. Repeat this every hour until the pain subsides.

2. Stretch the sore area gently to rid your body of lactic acid, which contributes to the pain.

3. Walk 15 to 30 minutes at least once a day to increase circulation throughout your body. This will also help deliver much-needed oxygen to the sore muscles.

4. Drink a minimum of eight glasses (64 oz.) of water daily - more if you're active - to hydrate your body.

5. Avoid strenuous activity as long as you're in pain.

Tips:
Be sure to warm up before exercising and stretching.

For people with chronic conditions or continual episodes of pain, heat can work better than ice (if you are not treating an acute injury). Try a heating pad, or a warm shower or bath.

Taking an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen, may also reduce muscle soreness.

You will be sore, but don't worry, your body is just strengthening the muscles. If you can muster enough strenghth, you run should go ok, it may not be the best but some of my best workouts and runs come when I'm sore from the previous day...Muscle relaxing creams do very little for you, but if it will help you mentally feel better about your soreness, you should go ahead and use it. Another tip, don't go out to fast in your 12 minutes, try to evenly use your energy throughout and when you have 4 or 5 minutes to go, try to pick up your pace, because chances are you've slowed down in the middle. Good Luck. You'll be ok.

Don't give him anything with acids in it, the muscles are sore do to "metabolic acidosis" caused by high muscle activity. Lots of water and some Ice hot might not hurt either. Do not use Alcohol and cold water it can cool the body to fast and send him into shock. Plus Alcohol is very flammable.

epsom salt and warm bath will help some. also have him eat a banana to help keep his legs from cramping up. only other suggestion is to prepare earlier for practice. start running in the beginning of summer so you can build up some indurance and not be so sore when practice starts.

Vitamin B complex AND vitamin E!

Both will help the muscles recover quicker, I take them both after my training for triathlons and marathons :)
