There is NO need to rush to your vet. These people have no idea what they are talking about. Allergic reactions which are life threatening to a canine do NOT result in a swollen face. 98% true... Allergic reactions which can/will result in death or serious injury present almost always as shock... lethargic, slow, pale gums, troubled or heavy breathing... a swolen face is not much to worry about, a dose of bendryl (between 1/2 and 2 pills depending on body weight) should help him feel better. My dogs have had this happen several times, twice accompanied by hives. The possibility of an abscess is there like the vet tech said, but she forgot to mention that an abscess will not cause the dogs face to swell up over night... it is a slow process and that area will be very painfull to the touch. Chances are if it become swollen in a few hours or overnight it is an allergic reaction (and not a dangerous one) to an insect bite or sting.

If he isn't having any difficulty breathing or presenting any symptoms other than facial swelling he'll be fine... hives, if they occure should put you on slightly more allert because it means the allergen is in his bloodstream instead of being localized. If he were to (very rarely) develop anything like diarrhea, vomiting, or become very lethargic (drained of energy, slow, etc) that's when you need to worry.

Are you leaving the pup inside or outside? Beagles howl, so what ever you do, you might want to inform your neighbors. Think about Doggy Daycare. Puppies are babies & need love and care. You need to bond before leaving the little one home alone. My Beagle will be 11 on Saturday, he is good at home along even when I have a long (20 hour) day. But that took a long time. Good Luck with your new Beagle baby. They are worth everything you are going to go though the 1st few years.

Give him a child's dose of Benadryl. I had a puppy who got stung on her lip and the vet said to calm down and give her a child's dose of Benadryl. If she refuses it, mix it up in some meat or wet dog food. Do call the vet, but I wouldn't recommend driving over there. It would cost you more and the dog might just have a harmless sting. Trust me, this does not sound deathly allergic. Sting allergies are usually most commonly found in toy dogs. So relax. If your dog is eating hard food his mouth is fine. Just give him some attention and do what I prescribed.

I would call the vet, it could be a bee sting, what if he is allergic to bee stings.
I would think bee if the dog has been outside, spider if inside, and pray not a snake.

Where the most swollen part of the face should tell you what caused it.
If sting, is the stinger still there? Wet tobacco will draw a stinger out, without a lot of pain to the dog.
Spider - you might see two small incisions (highly unlikely though), or red veins popping up near inject site.
Snake should be real obvious, two well defined puncture wounds, or if non poisonous - there will be signs of infection almost immediately.

It's possible it's an allergic reaction to something, possibly a bee sting. Call your vet and ask if it's alright to give him/her some benadryl-it'll help take the swelling down and pain away. You may need to make an appt. to have the stinger removed (if they find it's a bee sting) if you can't remove it or it hasn't been removed. Just to be safe call your vet and ask, usually they will give you advice as to whether you need to come in....it's pretty common for dogs to get stung by a bee...

head to your vet pronto. it could be a number of things, such as a bee sting...in fact giving him a benadryl or two wouldn't hurt, even if a sting is not the case. my big concern is that he has a tooth that has abcessed for what ever reason. if this is the case he could be in a LOT of pain, even if he's not showing it. he may need a dental cleaning to extract the tooth, in which case he'll be under anethesia, etc etc. get to your vet, maybe its a 3rd thing that i can't really think of what that might be! good luck!

He has probably been stung by a bee or wasp. If you have some liquid Children's benadryl, give him some, about 10 cc's and see if the swelling starts to go away. Watch him very closely. His airway could get closed off.

We live in the desert and our dogs have gotten bitten by weird bugs that can make you very sick and the vet and our doctors say to always keep benedryl in the house... I have taken it for bug bites and have given it to my dogs also... It's an antihistamine and it counter acts the venim... it will make the swelling go down...and prevent them from getting sick, unless it is a very poisonous bug then take them to the vet....if the swelling doesn't go down then take him in....
