Feeding a puppy 4-5 times a day is adequate as they are growing they need more food! But don't feed a huge amount at a time, moderation but more frequent is the key. After 6-8 months you can reduce the meals to 3 times a day. Adults (dogs) are less active as the grow older so they need less food.

Puppies 8 weeks to 6 months get 3 meals a day. After that, they get 2 meals.
Switch to adult food at 6 months as well if you feed a puppy formula.

You should let a puppy eat as much as they want to. Puppies will generally not over eat. They are growing and need a lot of energy at a young age to develop properly. When your puppy gets older you will have to determine if they can still be free fed. Some dogs will not over eat and will be fine free feeding for life others are over eaters and will need to be fed a specific amount a certain number of times a day. For smaller breeds it is especially important to make sure they are eating a multiple number of meals a day because they are at risk for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

With a large breed dog you should feed it 3 times a day. With a small breed like a Chihuahua, you should free feed the dog, leave the food out all the time. For dogs in between, a couple of times a day.

Eight week old puppies should be fed three times, daily. By eight weeks they should be able to eat standard, dry commercial food, but if you want to add liquid, that's fine.
When they are around four months, cut that to two times, daily.
After about a year, you may reduce to once daily, or maintain twice a day.
I prefer once daily at that time, as I consider that more typical for a carnivorous canine. But, I run a professional boarding / training facility and I would say that 70% of the folks who bring their dogs here feed their dogs twice daily.

I feed my puppy twice a day but I leave the food out for him all day so he can have a snack.

Twice a day, after they're about 4 months, all they can eat in about 15 minutes is good, if you feed high quality dog food. Until they're that old, 3 times a day.

we always left food down for our animals no matter how old they are or how much they ate. just remember to give you puppy a cut off time at night so that she/he wont have any accidents in the house. we always figured around 7pm was good.
