-Lack of communication. Although we all have cellphones, internet etc these are not direct means of communication. Family needs to sit down together at the dinner table.
-This is the ME generation as opposed to the WE generation. American is an individualistic society and not collective. Most people are just out for themselves and not interested in what's good for the whole.

How do you define "traditional family unit" I think thats the real question. I think in order to retore it...we need to know what it is!
SOme folks answered money, jobs and women rights as the cause of breakdown. Name me a peroid of time when all of these things were not an issue? These things are secondary to the issue, not causation.
So I would be more than willing to discuss this issue in some meaningful way if you could be so kind as describe what The tradtitional family unit means to you.

Its not so much a question of whats breaking it down, but what was creating the illusion that it was working in the past. There was a huge stigma about divorce, so millions of people suffered their whole lives in unhappy marriages. Women were beaten and were powerless to do anything about it. Today, people are more empowered. When a marriage fails, they get a divorce and move on to a happier situation.

Women in the work force and not at home with the children. With all these women willing to work, companies don't have to pay a decent wage. If the woman stayed home, the husbands would be earning more, the kids would be taken care of physically and financially.

there are many factors affecting families now adays... but the main factor could be the media, by tv, movies and internet. traditional family units have the tendencies to be attracted if not to copy what they see in the media, especially in topics like... spending quality time, sex, fashion, etc.

Hmmm purhaps its todays media and music. Rap is not a good example for the youth of today. Things these days are just really hard and people don't make time for the important things.

2 income families & people in slavery to material things. If you decide to be a parent - then be there for your kids! Don't just throw money at them. They need your presence & attention & love.
