Right, if we don't take the different mind-set into consideration that comes into play with the writing styles... Dutch, like all Germanic languages, is for the greater part a consonantal language with mostly closed syllables, whereas Nihongo has almost all syllables open. Language learning is NOT studying the words and constructions only, but should be an immersion into the culture and thinking.

Dutch is harsh and has many consonant clusters. Japanese is pretty much the opposite.
Interestingly, Japanese first learned western language by translating Dutch textbooks.

It's probably very difficult ('the hardest' is a bit subjective) because each belong to different Language Families and have different writing systems.

I 'm a chinese college student. I think it's normal that the US or UK people have trouble in learning japanese.Because 80% japanese character come from chinese .And 15% pronunciation come from chinese.But it's more simple than chinese. But most US and UK poeple dosen't like to use "汉字"(Chinese character) and they used to use "ABCD" (english character).

So it's easy for UK\US poeple to learn German.In fact It's easy for chinese to learn japanese.but it's difficult for japanese to learn chinese for chinese hard pronunciation^ ^

I think the most difficult language for anyone to learn would be Xhosa....
