When I was getting my first car my mom and I did a lot of research and had a lot of requirements for the car. Safe, reliable, less than 50k miles, less than $10k, and something sporty/cute. We eventually ended up getting a car we had never even considered until we saw it - a Toyota RAV4.
I love this car. It has been great, I have never needed anything done to it besides routine tire and break pad changes. The best part was that when I went off to college it had plenty of space for me to haul all of my stuff out there because of the large cargo area (something that I wasn't even thinking about at the time we purchased it). This was a great buy, and as any mechanic will tell you, you can't go wrong with a Japanese vehicle.
On top of all this, my car's value is still about the same as when we bought it. We could resell this vehicle right now and almost get all of our money back. We're not planning on doing that, but you can't ask for much more!

Popular and safe are 2 totally different things.
If my daughter was of driving age, i'd get her a volvo s-40. Safe, sporty & very fair value for a car.

my advice dont buy her a car unless she has earned it like good grades,a job, works hard at home if you spoil her she will never learn about real life, but if you do depending on the state you live in if you have snow id get a small 4x4 truck pref a toyota cuz they get good gas mileage if you dont get snow then a cavalier or grand am are good .
