Mainly he stood up to the Communist machine and was instrumental in its downfall.

While a Bishop in Poland and summoned to Vatican City, a Politburo overseerer from the USSR in Poland commented to a co-worker, "I hope they make him Pope and he doesn't come back." The other man looked back with a very apprehensive expression and said, "Be careful of what you wish for."

Pope John Paul II was considered very dangerous to the Soviets and it has since been proven they were behind the attempt to kill him.

World Youth Day is also his invention....drawing huge crowds of young people to the Church....and away from the garbage.

It amazes me that as hated as the Catholic Church is and how much people berate and insult John Paul II, that everywhere he traveled....and he traveled everywhere (the most traveled Pope in history) the crowds were always record setting. More people have seen John Paul II than any other human being who ever lived. Observers predicted that no one would show up at an early World Youth Day held in Denver, Colorado. When it came, the crowds nearly overwhelmed the city and stadium... not enough room for the enormous turnout.

Was certainly a very accomplished man...not sure about "most accomplished Pope of all time".
I do think he was an outstanding Pope...was well-liked, and was a good representative for the Catholic church. He was also gutsy, and not afraid to shy away from controversial issues. He visited Cuba, which a lot of conservatives did not like...and he spoke out against abortion, which a lot of liberals did not like. When you're pleasing and pissing off both conservatives and liberals, you're probably doing something right.
He was a great man, and will be missed.

Of the most recent history,

Since many Popes in past centuries ruled with armies and controled most of Europe.

So it is hard to compare depending on what you also mean by accomplished.

Pope Pious X had many more children by many more women than JP II. I think Pious was more accomplished.

Nope. He didn't create a calendar that is only off 8 hours every four years.

Not taking anything away from him. I think he will be a Saint and his name will be remembered in history with the suffix, "The Great".

I am not religious, but I agree that he did more than any other Pope, especially concerning world affairs.

yes. I heard he was also controversial because he proclaimed that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven. I can't believe this caused controversy in the Catholic church.

btw, the only intercessor we need is Jesus Christ.

I cannot in good faith judge our holy fathers of the Church, but I revere and will always petition our beloved holy father JP2. He's our ally in Heaven now.
