DO NOT get ANY kind of animal food, whether for a dog or for a mouse, at a grocery store!!! These are the foods such as Meow Mix, Purina, Iams, Fancy Feast, and I just can`t wait for those idiots to make a Beneful for cats. That would just make my week. These kinds of foods are about as nutritious as the bag it comes in. They have corn as the first ingredient, not only is it an allergen, but why the hell are we feeding corn to an obligate carnivore?? If you feed this food, you will almost definately be going to the vet MANY more times than a person who feeds their cat a high quality food.

I feed my animals premium food ONLY! Even my rodents. My adult cat is eating Blackwood, and my kitten is eating Nutro Natural Choice. I have never had to take any of my animals to the vet because of injury or ilness.

Only go to pet stores to buy pet food. Stay away from ridiculously cheap brands and stick to the premium food isle.

Depends on your budget, I'm on a very tight budget, but my cats are my everything, I feed them Eukanuba Indoor Formula and for variety, I give them Deli Cat and they get good treats, fresh catnip, and hydro catnip. Yeah, they are spoiled.

Science Diet and Nature's Own are real good brands too.

Try several different brands in your price range, see what your cat likes.

When you are looking at cat food, look at the list of ingredients, the very first thing should be a meat, not a by product of meat, but meat. Alot of companies add a lot of fillers to their food. Where as I pay $23.00 for a 9# bag of Eukanuba, I only have to feed a small portion to each cat, usually 2 x a day, and go through less than if I paid $15.00 for a 15# bag of a cheaper brand.

They utilize more from the better quality food and they waste less, which cuts down on the kitty litter bill.

Have fun with your new friend!

I would take the cat with me. The landlord obviously does not care very much for this cat if he went off to Italy for 3 years and left it living in a field. Maybe to move the cat out before the final moving day would be a good idea, in case the landlord is around at that time. Do you have a friend or family member that would look after the cat for you for a day or two? If you decide not to take the cat then please go for a rehome rather than buying a new kitten. There are so many cats out there waiting for new homes. All my cats have been rescued cats and I have never had a bad experience with any of them. Good luck, I hope it all works out well for you.

I would not feed a cat canned tuna. There are trace amounts of "heavy metals" (like mercury) in tuna, which is why preganant women are not supposed to eat it. The amounts are so small that a human body can process it, but cats cannot, and it has the potential to poison them fatally.

I have had several cats over the years and the best food that I've found for all my kitties is Eagle Pack Indoor Formula for Less Active Cats. My indoor kitty plays a lot, but he needs different nutrition to keep him healthy. From all the pet owners, vets, and pet stores that I've talked with, I think this is the best formula for my pet. It's a bit more expensive than some brands that you can buy at Wal-Mart and other large stores, but if you could see how healthy my little fuzzball is, you'd be amazed. His coat is shiny and he loves to play. Your pets are worth it, and we are stewards to our pets. They are totally dependent on us for their health and well-being and the least we can do is give them the best care possible. Good luck with your new friend! Here's hoping that you'll both be rewarded in great ways!

Iams science diet is good, but there are a lot of good brands out there. One of mine has a sensitive stomach, and Iams has a special food for that, the other two eat Meow Mix, indoor cat formula. Ask your vet for a recommendation when you take the new cat in (you should make an appointment as soon as you get the cat, even if it's not a kitten. Think of it as a check-up. That way you can get an appointment made to get the cat neutered/spayed if they aren't already). Make sure you don't forget lots of different types of toys for the cat- fake mice, balls, toys on strings, catnip, etc.

Love and take care of your new kitty, he/she will be depending on you! And please, keep them indoors if you can, it's so much better for them. Lots of luck!

Well, I just got a kitten, and she loves Kitten Chow. Some cats like kitten chow, but I think Cat Chow would be the best brand to buy. Also, some pet stores give free samples of different foods, so you can find out what kind she/he likes. Good luck!

In reply to Kenny's answer, yes, cats love tuna, but shouldn't be given it to eat that often, it can cause damage to their liver if fed more than that. Depends on how old the cat is... if it's a kitten I suggest Purina Kitten Chow, if it's older, go with the appropriate age choice in food.

"Cats for Dummies". You know the "dummies" books are all individually written by experts in the field. It covers health, grooming, behavior and diet issues.

The best food for your cat is the more expensive foods, not those you find in the grocery stores. They are more expensive and "you get what you pay for".

There are many ways to save money, toilet paper on sale, shoes on sale, etc.,etc. Cats need caregivers who realize that they deserve a quality food for a healthy and long life.

I just answered a post on helping cats lose weight and I list a lot of suggested foods.

litter, litter box and scooper. kitty treats, food & water bowls.

Feed your cat wet food every day with a supply of dry food all the time.

A bed is nice too.

The best food for your cat is probably science diet, but your vet can answer that the best

Research carefully the recent National Geograhic article linking not only toxoplasmosis to cats, but also schizophrenia. And we always thought cat ladies were already crazy. No! Their cats made them that way.
