The regular donut was created first, and as you know they have a hole in them and then they took the same dough that is used to make the regular donut and it was made in to the round donuts and the called them donut holes because it looked like the missing center(hole) of the original donut. It was just a cool name that the bakers came up with. It is not actually the center of the original donut as a lot of people think it is it is just an idea that someone came up with to sell something that taste the same as a donut but not as big. Hope this helps.

I think its because the little round donuts used to actually be the dough remaining from the punched out hole (the missing centre) of the regular traditional donut.

Because they resemble the actual pieces that used to come out of a donut when using a donut cutter. Now I'm pretty sure the holes themselves are so popular that Krispy Kreme and others just form donut holes themselves. Yum!

because they are the holes from the donut itself. They are the center that is taken out of the donut you see with the holes. Hence the names holes.

I'm really hoping that you are just kidding. Donut holes are the circle of dough that is cut out of the center of donuts.

That is what was punched out of the donuts with the holes.

To make a donut, you cut the center out of a piece of dough. The donut then has a hole, and the leftover chunk of dough once it's cooked IS the hole.
And that's the whole story.

If they did not sell the donut holes our land fills would be over run.

Without them, the donut has a hole. With them, the donut is more like a deep-fried muffin-bagel. It is like eating anti-matter, but only symbolically, thank goodness.
