If that's your Pit in the avatar picture, she's very pretty!

Several folks suggested teaming up with other responsible Pit Bull owners and attending Council meetings. Great idea, but you can take it a step further by bringing along articles that show what great things this breed can do. They are excellent at tasks that demand intelligence and a high prey drive (a definite Pit Bull trait) such as Search and Rescue, Agility, Obedience and certain types of service work such as drug sniffing. Do a Google search for articles that feature Pit Bulls in these roles and take them with you-- it's one thing to tell someone what a great dog the PB is; it's better to prove it. And, if your dog is well-behaved, I would even suggest bringing her along so that the Councilmembers can meet her... many of these laws are bred out of ignorance and fear. We all know that the vast majority of the bad actions of the dog are the result of poor owners, not bad dogs.

I know your buddy would stand by you-- here's your chance to return the favor!

"Punish the deed, not the breed."

How do they know yours is a pit? What if it was a Boxer mix that looked like a pit. Tell people its a mutt. Half boxer and half sharpei. Or tell them its racial profiling. Pit bulls didnt bring down the world trade center. And we dont ban the individuals like the ones that did. In my city, in the past 10 years, there have been two deaths from dog attacks, both Siberian huskies. Also tell them to ban law makers that that are clinically retarded. Which would be most of them. If they try to ban my Doberman, I'll just tell them that its not a doberman, its an unbelievably large manchester terrier. Also tell them that, that Mormon nut in Texas that the FBI is looking for, banned all dogs and maybe they should enlist his help. But I have no strong feelings on the matter one way or another.

It is completely normal for cities across the world to be banning pitbulls - and it's really unfortunate! The only thing you can do (if it's not too late already...it usually is too late by the time the general public hears about it) is get as many people as possible in the city to sign a petition against the ban, and attend the city council meetings to explain why you don't think they should put the ban in place. This means you will have to do background research and be very knowledgeable in order to make a case against it.

Call city hall. Get all the info about when the voting is taking place.
Call Pitt Bull breed rescues and clubs, a vet will have the numbers. Chances are they already have something in the works and you can join them. If not, they know a lot of folks to call to start a rally.
Look in the paper for breeders. They won't want this ban to start, they will help you protest.

Honestly, best advice I can give is find someone who'll loan you a video camera and just make a collage of your pet in action. Long as you're a decent owner, no pitbull is vicious. Get video of it playing with family or friends' kids, other pets, etc as proof it's the owner, not the dog. Bring said video to a couple town meetings and let it get spread around. I had the forethought of when I adopted a pitbull/rotty combo, I had her registered legally as a lab (My mother works at an animal hospital, so my ex and I got her to do that for us as a house warming gift).

WTF? I didn't think that ban pertained to people who already owned the breed. That's not fair at all. Are you in California? I've heard that state is "cracking down" on pit bulls.

You could start a petition, or ask whoever to perform an aggression test on your pit. Not that stupid 'fake hand grabbing the food' test either. I'm not sure what the best solution is, but perhaps you could find some support in your town through a petition, as mentioned earlier. Good luck.

Pit bulls are hard to keep well-behaved? Just get rid of the dog? What is wrong with you people! Just like someone already said, it isn't the dogs that are bad its the owners!

Heres some statistics for you by the way:
Over 200,000 people that died last year from tobacco
Close to 50,000 died from auto accidents
Close to 20,000 died from alcohol
Yet only 2 died from pitbull attacks
Hmmmm....what do you think needs to be banned???

Where do you live? I have four dogs two of whom are pit mixes. I never tell anyone what type of dogs they are, my vet warned me. We list them as mixed breeds. I even made the groomer list them as mixed breeds. I would contact your local shelters for help. In my opinion, biased yes, pit's and all dogs are products of their owners love and training. Pit's are very stable and loving dogs, education and proper training are a must. I would also try to get your neighbors involved to help with a petition against the ban. You could also call on local vets, and trainers for help, Ceaser Milan may be a good person to ask. Good luck!

Go to council meetings. If your dog isn't dangerous you can show them. Plus maybe Ceaser Millan can help (the dog whisper) He has 2 pit bulls he uses in his programs who are very sweet. Somehow he might just be a savior? lol

Here we just got breed specific spay/neuter. The thing is...the only dog I have ever been attacked by was a golden retriever that chewed me up pretty bad. Also border collies have been known to kill people too.
