If the dog has been out there for 5 yrs, it's definitely hard to begin the domestication process, considering the trauma that she had gone through.
But the ASPC would have ways to tame the wild beast and sterilise it as well. You would want to consider that before adopting it. It's not going to be a simple process tho'...

O.k. here's a thought.Don't put food out for her.Wait till you know she's hungry and leave a trail of dry food into the house and a bowl of food at the end of the trail not too far inside.Everyday move the bowl farther into the house.
I'm assuming she'll let you pet her at this point. And if so set on the couch with her several times a day and have leash in your lap.Pet her and talk to her and move the leash next to you on the couch.Pet her and talk to her some more and set the leash by her.Pet and talk some more and pick up the leash and pet her with the leash in your hand.If you don't get this far that's o.k. leave the leash on the couch where she can see it won't hurt her.If you keep this up it should'nt be long before she'll let you put the leash on her.But don't leave it there long.
And if it's taking too long to accustom her to it I wonder if you can literally fence in your porch with chicken wire temporarily so she'll be confined but not on a chain while you tame her. That should appaese the police.Altho your neighbors probably won't like it.

Of course-all dogs are domesticated-have been so for ages-not a wild animal anymore and takes very little for the dog to become trusting-for that is what is now lost. You get the dog to trust you by being consistent in providing food, water and being gentle with it-talk softly and move slowly around it-talk to it.Tell the dog how you'll caare for it.won't mistreat and thaat the dog can always depend on you. Be very sure that you 1.want the dog 2.can afford to take care ofit, including Vet care 3.Be sure you want for life of the dog if not the contact the Humane Society,ASPC or other animal shelter(not a pound that just kills) but if you do then
follow above advice and show the dog it can depend on you. If you take the dog in then 1.take to your vet and get proper inoculations-rabies by law-can get 3-yr rabies shot and chk-up.
Once the dog knows it can depend on you for food, water and shelter then it'll stay -treat with love and kindness and be gentle and it'll eventually love you-doesn't take that long and no love more pure than a dogs for unconditional. Took in a stray(already 4 yrs old and could tell severly abused) talked to it and it stayed-instead of just coming for food and leaving and now happy dog-do not allow unsuperviased with real small kids for because of abuse am caraeful for his benefit. Has never shown meannes although barks at strangers and not so cowed anymore. Good Luck and if you take in dog and treat it well-you'll do a very good thing.

It is possible, but it sounds like she's been through a lot. The only major advice I can give is somehow get her into the house and show her how nice you are and how safe she'd be. The best way to get her to come into house is to leave the door propped open and leave whatever you've been feeding her just inside the door. With every little bit bring her food dish further into the house. Hope this helps! Good luck!

if we want to be technical here, regardless if it's a stray or not, it's still domesticated, it's just feral. ;) Ok i'm done being an ***.....anything is possible, give it a shot, if it doesn't work out at least you tried. If it does, then you'll have a great dog to show for your efforts, goodluck with it!

With a stray dog the first thing you have to do is get their trust. If they can learn to trust you you can train them. A good way to do this is to brib them with food. Start slow with some caned food and don't give it to her unless she takes it out of your hand. work her up to were she will let you pet her before she gets the food. she will start to trust you to get food. after this you can work on getting her to trust you on a larger scale. good luck

I took in a stray boxer and he became very docile and very protective, you might want to use caution since strays on their own for a very long time become extremely untrusting and self protective..could even be sick so be careful...good luck..

I adopted a German Shepherd that was on her own for a few years..Yes you can domesticate them but it takes a lot of time, dedication and ability to understand their fears. My German Shepherd turned out to be a wonderful companion, she was with us until her death from cancer a few months back.

Probably not. Five years is a long time living wild and you would probably not be able to undo that.
