Not knowing where you are from, and you not knowing where you migiht be traveling to and you not knowing what to say, you are going to be best off playing it safe. Say "root beer soda pop," or "orange soda pop," or "Cherry Coke soda pop," or if you really want a "Coke," say Coke, or if you're from the Pepsi generation, say "Pepsi" please. Then go on with this advice to continue to play it safe.

Pop, because I'm canadian and is primarily used up north. Soda is american and is usually only used in the united states.

I find that friends of mine from the deep south refer to it as soda-pop, or coke, even if you aren't drinking that specific brand.

I say "pop" for everything except for orange soda. I think it's an Ohio thing.
