In terms of population, Bangkok is much bigger, as it is the capital of Thailand and has 10 million residents. Phuket is more than 500 miles away and is a resort island off the coast, so the amount of people there varies depedning on tourists, averaging nearly 3 million a year (permanent population is 225,000). The area is still rebounding from the destructive tsunami that hit in late 2004. The island is also smaller in terms of land size (570 sq. km) than Bangkok (1568 sq. km).
