Pretty much any breed of horse or pony can be used for hunters and jumpers.

Hunter is more about you and your horses' way of going and style over fences.

Jumpers are timed, you WILL NEED speed, and if you knock a rail down, you get a fault or penalty.

The range of cost in the horses will depend on the horse's breeding, how much training he has had, or how many competitions he has won.

I'm not sure about the clothing... I haven't shown hunter jumper in like... 3 years. if you want to know more, go to ushja.com.

Equestrian Hunters:
They are juged on how the rider looks and how the horse looks. They have classes that judge you over jump and then your horse over jumps. The jumps are usually low and usually there is nothing you could knock over unless your horse stops in front of it or runs through it. The breeds of horses used in the hunters are endless. The courses are usually very easy like line diagonal line or diagonal line line... something very simple. There is not a time limit. The judge who watches you go decides who wins. Hunters do have to wear specific clothing and colors, but it depends on the show they go to. Some shows require certain clothing items to be worn along with color. The range of cost for horses is endless anywhere from $3,000-$300,000. Usually they aren't as exspensive as jumpers, but they are costly.

Jumpers:
Jumpers aren't jugded on the way they ride or their horse. They go into a ring and have a certain course which is complicated or not so complicated just depending on the lever of the class they are riding in. A buzzer sounds and that means it is time to start. The point of the jumpers is to go around the course the fastest without knocking over any jumps or poles. Whoever has the fastest time wins. They have to go over a certain amount of jumps which sometimes are wide jumps or have water under them or it could be a triple combination which means there is three jumps in a row. If the rider knocks down a fence or a pole it is a fault and counts against them. Usually you use some sort of horse from germany when you get into high levels of competition. The horses in germany are breed to jump high jumps. A comman breed is dutch warm bloods. The colors and clothing the riders wear is like the hunters, it just depends on the show and what they want and require. The horses are very costly. Most are very expensive anywhere from $70,000-$1,500,000.

Hope that helps!

Hunters:
MANY breeds used in open and in breed competition - quarter horse, thoroughbred, appaloosa, paint, arabian, POA, welsh, mixed bred, etc. An approved safety helmet, conservative color of dress is needed; depicts a hunter in the field, but tested over jumps in the ring. There are also "flat hunters" which are judged without jumping. Judging is on way of going and, when over jumps, being able to properly get over the jumps and look good doing it. Even cadence of gaits, not too much speeding up or slowing down but a steady pace draws attention. Cost of horses can be from $1,000-1500 for a green broke prospect on up for one proven with a show record depending on what level and what breed.

Jumpers - normally the taller athletic breeds, TB, Irish sport horse, Hanoverians, Trakheners etc. They have a timed course over jumps - fastest time with fewest faults (knockdowns etc) wins. Open competition is dominated by the larger breeds because each round the fences are raised until there is one clear round fastest winner remaining. As the jumps go up the taller, more athletic horses are better equipped to get over the jumps. More variety in the equipment used - prices vary as do the hunters but the top jumpers will be considerably more expensive. A good jumper can cost $40-50,000 and the better ones go up considerably from there.

Not sure what you mean by history.
