do you think that when kids choose what classes they want that they should be alowed to write down names of people they'd like in their classes?

That would be kinda cool (having all of your friends in the same class, same time would be total awesomeness!), but I don't think it would be a good idea. Kids need to be exposed to different cultures, thoughts, beliefs, styles, etc., and that all is possible through mix-matching students like classes are usually composed of. Sure, the kid next to you may be trying to have some of your 'tots, and the class pet is like your worst enemy, but that's all part of the real world once you get a job. Students need to have a mixture of peers in their classroom. In the beginning of the year everyone may be enemies, but once you end the year, you will have the appreciation of knowing many kids that come from different backgrounds. Besides, some classes (like honors or Advanced Placement) may be too much for some of your less-intelligent pals. :)

No and I'll tell you why. First, kids don't know what they need to learn; I'm sorry but it's true. If you let a kid decide what to take, of course they're going to take what is easiest for them and not what's best. Second, by having classes with people you don't know and sometimes don't like allows you to meet people and get life experience that you will need in the real world. If kids just hang out with their friends in classes that are easy for them then our future would not be very bright. There would be more socializing then studying (I mean more than there already is) and children would not get the education they need and deserve. America already has a poor education system and that would make it exponentially worse.

NO. I don't think they should be able to choose most of their classes either. there should be some core classes they have to take each year in order to pass. English(with spelling and language), math, science, world history. And they should have to take it with everybody else, not just their friends. In fact, it it is a big school, they should try to keep cliques in separate classes as much as possible. Why should the kids get to decide whether someone is allowed to take a class or not. How very rude and bigotted is that?!!!

No. Popularity comes and goes. Let that work itself out in a natural way. The best way for a student to have good classes is to get high grades and be put in the advanced course.

Class scheduling is one of the most difficult chores that schools have to do. Adding such a variable would make class scheduling impossible.

;-D Letting students choose also encourages cliques and other problems such as racism.

Totally and absolutely not. It's bad enough that school has become such a huge popularity contest. It would be suicide to let them pick whomever they wanted to interact with. Segregation along social lines would become fissures. As it is, classes are already leaning toward certain social groups in junior high and high school. Let's not make it worse by not giving kids an opportunity to see outside their own little groups because they just got to choose to never have to.

No, I don't think the school should cater to a kids personal preferances. Part of the experience is learning to deal with people they might not be best friends with.

No way! Teachers would never get anything taught, thus you'd never learn. It would turn into a huge social gathering. That's not the purpose of school.

No because they wouldn't be prepared for the real life outside of school. When you get older, you don't get to choose your boss or your co-workers.
