I have been rather free with bashing Abrahamic religions. To be fair, one must acknowledge the humanity of at least some of its followers. Kiss a catholic for their contributions to schools and hospitals; many christians for their charity-work; some muslims for the green crescent (aka muslim red cross); jews for the charity work done by their synagogues. But such charity and seeming altruism is really selfishly done to reserve their places in their vision of the afterlife, and does not discount the misery that their dogma imposes on the rest of the world. Isn't it far better to be an altruist, rather than do "good" because you are dogma-driven?

A lot of agnostcs and even atheists work charity through the Churches, this is not a wrong thing to do. Sometimes the churches are the best organizations to accomplish our purposes through just because they are so well established and accepted. You do not need to be a religious fanatic to work with the Red Cross or the St John's Ambulance, just competent.

Your question starts from a false premise. I did charity work when I was an atheist, and I still do it now that I am a Christian. For someone with the phrase "intellectually honest" in their question, you should really not pose a question that starts from such a blatantly false premise.

Hello noitall.. :)

We do not help those in need, so we can reserve a place in Heaven..because one cannot enter into the Gates, by good works only..because you must also have faith..

I Love everyone..it hurts my heart deeply, to see someone in need..that is why my hearts desire is to be a missionary for our Lord..Amen!!

In Jesus Most Precious Name..
With Love..In Christ.. :)

So you are more altruistic than all of the Great Religions of the World? And they call us judgmental?

Everyone has to decide how the world makes sense to them and operate from that sensibility. For that reason, the only fair answer to your question is "sometimes."

you can not get to heaven by any good deeds done. it might be better for you in heaven such as stars in your crown. but the only way to get to heaven is by beleiving that God sent his only son to the world to save you from your sin and take your punishment. you have a choice, you can have faith and try to live a good christian life. or can live your life trying to do good things for others. Die and go to hell.
