Crowns are what hold up the diamonds on your head - oh wait, wrong crown.

When your tooth is not salvageable and needs to be replaced but the root is good, dentists will do a root canal - that clears out all organic matter from the roo - then shape the stump that is left and fit a porcelain or gold jacket - the crown - on top. It is cemented permanently into place and the conglomeration behaves like any other tooth.

This procedure is also done when people have small, misshapen, crooked or ugly teeth and they want to have a mouth full of the pearly white piano keys so beloved in North America.

(For contrast: in feudal Japan the higher-born one was, the whiter the face -with rice flour - and the BLACKER the teeth. Go figure.)

All of the above answers are accurate. We just don't know why YOU have crowns. I am going out on a limb here to say this, but if your crowns are "silver color" and "not very natural looking," it would be my guess that they are not custom made crowns. Instead, they sound like the kind we take out of a box with a few "off the rack"sizes. These are generally used as a temporary measure to get you through a rough spot until you can afford to have the procedure done right. (Remember, I can't see what you really have and this might not be the case. I'm just preparing you in case a dentist who can actually see you says the same thing. You won't be shocked.)

if the tooth is damaged too much to hold a filling, then the dentist will recommend a crown. when i write 'too damaged' i mean like for example- the cavity is too big or it's chipped too badly...so after the dentist files away the bad part of the tooth & fills it...it won't be able to support the filling and the tooth will break apart once u bite down on something.

the crown will provide support, so that u won't have to remove ur tooth. no fake tooth will ever exceed the way ur real teeth naturally work for u.

Crowns are used in dentistry when you have a root canal or when you have a tooth with a large filling that is failing. A crown fills in the space where the rest of your natural tooth was. They are expensive but last a long time. Crowns look very natural.

Crowns are a cover that goes over the tooth made of metal and/or metal porcelain.

Its a way to save the tooth and prevent it from being extracted.

Crowns are to protect the fragile tooth after the root canel. They basically help to keep the tooth from falling out. If you can afford to get them, DO IT!
